One week later...
I sat cross-legged on the couch, watching as Niyoka tidied up the living room. Her movements were slow and deliberate, like she was trying to keep herself busy. It was almost second nature now; every time I came over this past week, she was either cleaning, organizing, or just pacing the house. I'd tried to convince her to rest, but she wouldn't hear it.
This is why we're best friends cause I did the same thing when Zach got shot.
"Yuh sure yuh nuh want help wid dat?" I asked, gesturing to the pile of cushions she was rearranging.
She glanced at me with a faint smile. "Mi good, man. Yuh nuh see mi barely do nothing?"
"Barely do nothing? Yuh a act like yuh nuh just finish sweep di whole living room," I said, shaking my head.
She shrugged, sitting down across from me. "Mi affi keep mi self busy, yuh know? Mi cyaan just sit and think all day."
I nodded, understanding all too well. At least she looked better today—her face wasn't as pale, and there was a flicker of energy in her eyes.
"Di rest a di girls soon come," I said, trying to lift the mood. "Bay chatting and skin teeth tonight, mi feel it."
She gave me a small smile but didn't say anything. A part of me worried she wouldn't fully enjoy herself, but I was determined to make sure she did.
About fifteen minutes later, loud knocking echoed through the house.
"must dem dat I said, hopping up to open the door. Sure enough, shenell, Ashley, Rihanna and Mikayla were standing there, arms loaded with snacks and drinks.
"Finally!" Ashley exclaimed as she stepped inside.
"Tek long fi open the door and we hand dem fool ," Shenell said, rolling her eyes. "
"Unnu come wid di vibes or not?" I teased, taking a bag of chips from Ashley.
"Vibes deh yah," Ashley replied with a grin. "But unnu better have music or mi gone back home.
Like we aguh need it..
The girls laughed as they piled into the living room, dropping the snacks on the coffee table.
"Alright, alright, everybody sit down," I said, taking charge. "Tonight is fi Niyoka. Di whole purpose a dis is fi mek sure she relax and have some fun.
We all settled in, munching on snacks and catching up on life. The conversation naturally shifted to old memories, and before long, the room was filled with laughter.
"Yuh memba dat time shenell did a run from di stray dog and trip over di fence?" Ashley asked, struggling to speak through her laughter.
"Yuh really ago bring dat up?" Shenell shot back, glaring playfully. "Mi nuh care. At least mi nuh fraid a cockroach like yuh!"
