"If my wall clock tells me that it's four in the morning, I swear I'll give it hell"

                                                                ~Goodnight Moon

"I can't do it Kylie, I can't", I whispered, slamming the cover of the piano on topof the ivory keys I loved so much. I blinked back tears, I was thirteen again, and I was struggling with the keys to a simple classic. It was the one piece I had never been able to perfect, and being considered a pianist protegee at age five meant I should've surpassed this long ago. Bach: Partitia #6 was supposed to be easy for me. Everything with the piano came like breathing to me. Why, why couldn't I do it?

"This isn't the Rosabella I know," Kylie whispered this softly, gently placing a hand on my shoulder. She gave me a light smile, one that made her oceanic eyes glow with flecks of amber. Her brown bangs were falling into her eyes and her skin had that odd glow to it. I felt tear spring to my eyes from frustration. I opened the piano again, determined to try once move.

"That's it" Kylie breathed, watching me carefully as my long fingers danced across the keys as the melody filled the living room. Kylie had learned how to play the piano just to be able to see if I was really so good at it. Seeing as I had taught her just to see if I was hitting the right keys, she had taken the place as more of a teacher than a spectator. That is, if the student was far ahead of the teacher. I focused on the keys in front of me, chanting the notes in my mind. I couldn't mess up. I hadn't realized I finished the song before the last note of the song was still lingering in the air. I whipped my head up back to Kylie.

"I did it! I did it!" I squealed, hugging her tightly. We just laughed, all it took was a little push.

Five Months Later

"That new student saved my life Kylie! Did you see him?" I whispered to her in our home room, grinning like a mad woman. I just couldn't believe it! I flipped my currently red hair around back to her when I heard her response.

"You act like he's all that, Rose, but he's seriously a jerk!" she replied heatedly, her blue eyes hardening. I blinked three times before responding.

"How do you know?" I asked softly, propping my head up with my hand, giving her a bright smile. She just shook her head. And then said boy walked into my room. Just the way he walked made my airways tighten and my head spin. His hair was in a messy fashion, like he just rolled out of his bed. His beautiful green eyes seemed to scan the whole room before settling on Kylie and I. I felt my cheeks burning already, and I quickly glanced at Kylie. She was glaring at him, something she rarely did.

"Hey lab partner!" Oliver grinned, sitting in the chair next to Kylie. Kylie instantly flinched, like he'd just hit her or some thing.

"Stay away from me and my friends!" Kylie hissed, smacking away his hand as he reached around to give her a one armed hug. I felt uncomfortable, they obviously knew each other more than Kylie let on. Why didn't she tell me?

"Aw, but I was just going to ask your friend if she could help me around school, I mean, I did save her at the beach!" Oliver argued, a wolfish grin on his face. When he turned to me, my cheeks were already a flaring fire truck red. "Red Rosa!" chanted in my head as he asked me with a silent look to be his guide.

"Kylie, I don't see that harm" I started nervously. Kylie gave him another glare but reluctantly agreed. And that was the moment our friendship seemed to begin and crumble at the same time.
