Chapter 42: Home Is Where the Heart Is
The soft sound of cooing filled the bedroom, a melody that had become a part of Wonwoo’s mornings. Blinking against the warm rays of sunlight streaming through the curtains, he turned to see Mingyu perched on the edge of the bed, cradling their baby girl.
She latched onto Mingyu, her tiny hand resting against his chest as she suckled, her eyes occasionally fluttering open to meet her father’s adoring gaze. Mingyu looked down at her, his face aglow with the kind of love that was so pure it seemed to make the room itself brighter.
Wonwoo stayed still, not wanting to disturb the serene moment. But his stillness didn’t stop Mingyu from noticing him.
“Good morning,” Mingyu said softly, his voice laced with warmth.
“Good morning,” Wonwoo murmured, his voice husky from sleep. He propped himself up on an elbow, watching them with a small smile. “How long have you been up?”
“Not too long,” Mingyu replied, brushing his fingers gently over their daughter’s soft hair. “She was hungry, so I thought I’d let you sleep a little longer.”
Wonwoo reached out to trace the curve of his daughter’s cheek with his finger. “You spoil me, you know that?”
Mingyu chuckled. “You deserve it.”
Wonwoo leaned forward, pressing a kiss to Mingyu’s temple. “No, you do. Both of you.”
The day passed in the blur of routine that parenthood often brings. Wonwoo left for work, his day packed with meetings, negotiations, and the constant weight of being a mafia boss. Despite his composed exterior, he found his thoughts drifting back to his family more and more.
By the time he returned home, his muscles ached, and his mind felt like a storm, but all of that melted away the moment he stepped through the door.
“Wonwoo, you’re home!” Mingyu’s voice called out from the living room.
He followed the sound to find Mingyu sitting on the floor, their baby girl on a soft play mat in front of him. She was giggling, her little hands grasping at the colorful toys Mingyu dangled over her.
Wonwoo’s exhaustion evaporated in an instant. “How’s my little princess?” he asked, his voice softening as he crouched beside them.
The baby squealed, reaching for him, and he carefully scooped her up, pressing kisses all over her tiny face. She responded with more giggles, and Mingyu laughed along, the sound like music to Wonwoo’s ears.
“And how’s her mother?” Wonwoo asked, turning to Mingyu.
“Happy now that you’re home,” Mingyu teased, leaning into Wonwoo as he sat beside him.
Wonwoo wrapped an arm around Mingyu’s shoulders, pulling him close while cradling their daughter in his other arm. “This,” he said, looking between them, “is the best part of my day. Nothing else compares.”
Mingyu smiled, resting his head on Wonwoo’s shoulder. “You know, I think she feels the same way. She always gets extra excited when she hears the door open.”
Wonwoo’s heart swelled. He gazed at the tiny girl in his arms, then at Mingyu, the love of his life. In their little family, he found a peace that no amount of power or wealth could ever provide.
“You two are everything to me,” he said softly, kissing Mingyu’s hair.
“And you’re everything to us,” Mingyu replied, squeezing his hand.
As their daughter dozed off in Wonwoo’s arms, the three of them sat there in the quiet of their home, surrounded by nothing but love. Wonwoo realized that this—these simple, precious moments—was what life was truly about.
