- Loud Knock -

I jolted awake to a noise coming from somewhere in the room. I had been sleeping deeply in the soft hotel bed, wrapped in several blankets. My mind struggled to understand what had disturbed my sleep. I propped myself up a bit and, with my eyes half-closed, glanced over to see Mia asleep with her stuffed toy and her kitten nearly on her head.

"Mia," I said groggily, but she didn't stir, her breathing steady and deep. What on earth could it be?

- Loud Knock -

I sprang up from the bed, my hair a wild mess around my face. Someone was banging on the door, almost slamming into it. I felt a bit dazed but was anxious about who it might be. I grabbed my gun and stumbled to the door, peeking through the peephole to check who was there at 8 in the morning. It was our sixth day at the beach, and we were sun-kissed and content, sleeping in, watching movies, dining out, and shopping for souvenirs. I wasn't expecting any visitors! I stood on my tiptoes and sighed at the unexpected sight waiting for me outside. What a shock... who would have guessed... ugh...

I was in decent pajamas, so I figured it was fine if this surprise guest saw me looking a bit messy. I opened the door, holding my gun in my right hand, with sleep still in my eyes, wrinkled clothes, and a puffy face, and said, "Yes?" He looked at me with irritation and focused on the gun I was holding.

"You have no idea how much trouble I had to clear my schedule, so don't give me that look. What's up with your hair?" He asked boldly as he walked into the room without an invitation and dropped his travel bag on a chair.

"What do you want, Mason?" I replied, clearly annoyed. I practically hissed at him. I was on vacation and had no patience for offended guys. He was dressed all in black, wearing workout clothes and combat shoes.

"What are you two doing away from home for so long?" he asked irritably. The nerve of him...

"Did you marry Mia and forget to tell us? I didn't realize we needed to explain ourselves for taking a few days off. And she at least replied to your messages once a day, right?" He scoffed at my words. "I'm not in a good mood, Isabella. Your ex-fiancé calls me daily to check if everything's fine here, asking if there's a guy with you, wanting to know if the hotel bill is settled. I'm not his secretary, that annoying jerk. I've never met a man as biased as him, what a sorry excuse."

Um... "Don't you have a mirror at home?" I shot back dryly, crossing my arms. Just then, Mia stirred and sat up in bed, looking adorably sleepy. Why couldn't I wake up looking as cute as she did?

"Who is it?" she asked, her voice still heavy with sleep. "It's me," Mason answered, slipping off his shoes and heading toward Mia's bed. I stood there, watching him. "What do you think you're doing?" I questioned.

"I'm exhausted. I haven't slept in four days, and I don't want to argue," he said as he climbed into Mia's bed and lay back. Mimi instantly leaped up and started purring and wriggling on Mason's chest.

"Hey there, little one..." he said, grinning at the kitten. "You missed me, huh? I knew you would."What the heck! "Mason, get off...!" I shouted, but before I could push him away (I could have done it), Mia turned and wrapped her arms around his arm like it was a pillow. Mason looked at me with a smug grin, raising his eyebrows as if to say I needed more proof of his welcome.

I closed my eyes and counted to ten to calm down, then went to Mia to try waking her up. I shook her shoulders for a solid five minutes until she yelled for me to stop, and then I gave up. Mia could be adorable when she woke up, but she had a temper like a raging storm. "Mason, if you even think about getting naked, I will shoot you," I warned him as I returned to my bed for another nap. Mia and I usually slept until around ten and then went down for breakfast, so I still had two hours left to sleep.
