"Mia... I need your help," I murmured into my phone. "What? What's going on?!"
"Nothing serious, don't worry," I reassured her when I heard the fear in her voice. "I was hoping you could join me for a little trip. I want to drive to that beach a couple of hours away and stay in a hotel for a few days."
"Um... that sounds fun, but why now?" Mia replied with a hint of surprise. "Is this about Jonathan, the swine?" Yes. "I get it... I can't stand being cooped up in this house either. Mason said I can't go back to my apartment because of the investigation and that it might be dangerous... blah blah blah... I really don't want to see his ugly face after what happened yesterday. I'm totally in for this trip!"
"Huh? What happened? You never mentioned being upset with Mason," I said, surprised. Since everything with my sister happened and I met Mia, we've become close friends and share almost everything daily. When Jonathan suggested visiting my mom, Mia wanted to come, but Mason "forbade" her, claiming she was under light "witness protection" and could mess up the investigation if she went.
She mentioned that he "lost" her car keys and front door keys too, so she locked herself in her room that day and wouldn't let anyone in, even when he promised to make her favorite meal to say sorry. To me, they looked like a married couple, but I couldn't bring it up with Mia because hadn't forgiven him for what he did when they first met, and she would get really upset if I joked about it.
The day after Jonathan broke the chain on my door, she came to visit. She was shocked by Jonathan's actions because she only knew him from my side, and it didn't seem like him at all. "I think he's feeling a bit desperate," she said while the maintenance team replaced the chain with a stronger one and added a new device to stop anyone from opening the door as Jonathan did. He had asked for that himself.
"I think he's starting to feel the pressure of the separation. At first, he probably thought things would get better quickly, but now he's not acting like his usual self and is making a fool of himself. So typical." She kept munching on the chocolate chip cookies with nuts I had baked for her. "Did he text you or try to reach out after the door incident?" she asked, curious.
"He sent me a text to apologize and suggested we have dinner, but I just ignored him. In the end, he sent some food from a restaurant, but thankfully, he didn't show up. I'm considering blocking this new number he's using..." I told her.
We chatted for more than an hour afterward and watched a few movies together. Now, I was calling her to suggest this trip. I didn't want to be around when Jonathan pushed for the trip. There was no way I was going to sit in a car with him for who knows how long and pretend to be his "partner." I didn't even want to look at him given the current situation. I thought about going out alone and finding a hotel to wait it out, but I wasn't going to let Jonathan think he was in charge.
It would be much better to have fun and enjoy a few days on vacation with my friend in a warm place. "So, are you in, Mia? Maybe Mason won't let you go..." I said, sounding a bit unsure. I really wasn't clear on their relationship. Mia insisted nothing had happened, but Mason's behavior made me question that. He acted like a jealous husband, sending her messages to check when she'd be home.
"Mason doesn't control me, you know? He's just a stupid idiot! And when I get back from this trip, I'm not staying in his apartment anymore."
"What did he do?" I pressed her, as she wasn't getting to the point.
"I was in the living room, just relaxing..." That's how horror stories begin. "He was in the kitchen preparing dinner, and his phone was on the table with me. I wasn't paying attention, but then the screen lit up with a message from a woman asking where he was and why he hadn't called. Honestly, it's not my concern. If he wants to see other women, that's his choice.
