The next morning, I woke up feeling fresh but still slightly annoyed about last night. I took a quick shower, got ready, and headed downstairs. As I walked into the dining room, the usual hustle and bustle of my family greeted me.
Ramsha was sitting at the table, scrolling through her phone with a plate full of food in front of her. Huzaifa was busy stuffing his face with parathas, like he hadn't eaten in days. Ammi was serving chai to everyone, while Abba was busy reading the newspaper, occasionally throwing in comments about some political drama.
I sat down and reached for the chai pot. Just then, Maham walked in, looking as if she owned the place. She greeted everyone sweetly, flashing her innocent smile. I knew she was up to something, as always. She sat down beside me and grabbed the jug of orange juice.
But, of course, she had to mess things up. While pouring the juice, the glass slipped from her hand, and it spilled all over the table. My eyes widened, and I turned to her, already annoyed.
"Maham! Kya kar rahi ho? Tumse ek kaam theek se nahi hota!" I scolded, shaking my head.
Before she could respond, Ramsha chimed in. "Bhai, chill kar lo. Accident tha. Koi jaan bujh ke thodi karta hai." She gave me a pointed look.
Huzaifa nodded, stuffing another bite of paratha in his mouth. "Haan bhai, overreact mat karo. Poor Maham bhabhi."
Ammi, always on Maham's side, came over with a cloth to clean the mess. "Haroon, tumhe bas ek baat ka bahaana chahiye hota hai daantne ka. Bechari Maham ka galti se gir gaya, aur tum shuru ho gaye."
I looked at Abba for support, hoping he'd understand, but he just folded his newspaper and smiled. "Beta, apni biwi se thoda pyaar se baat karo. Tumhare daantne ka zamana gaya."
Maham, who had been quietly watching all this, suddenly turned to me and smirked. "Dekha? Sab meri side pe hain. Tumhe bhi meri taraf hi aana padega."
I glared at her but didn't say anything. Ramsha laughed, and Huzaifa muttered, "Poor bhai, hamesha har jaata hai."
The rest of the breakfast went on with everyone teasing me, especially Maham, who kept giving me smug looks every now and then. I sighed. This family really loved her more than me, and I wasn't sure how to feel about it.
As soon as we got back to our room, Maham told me her school friends had invited us for dinner. Honestly, I wasn't too excited about it, but she looked happy, so I agreed.
While I got ready quickly, Maham was still deciding on what to wear, pulling out half her wardrobe onto the bed. "Maham, ap itna time kyun lagta ho? Ek outfit choose kar lo aur pehan lo," I said, sitting on the edge of the bed, waiting for her.
"Haroon, tum samjh nahi sakte! Yeh dinner hai, aur woh bhi mere school ke doston ke saath. I wanna look perfect ," she replied, her tone slightly annoyed but focused on the clothes.
