The morning sun peeked through the blinds, casting streaks of light across the room. I stirred, groaning slightly as I stretched, my arm instinctively reaching out for Amahle. My hand landed on her side, and I froze for a moment, realizing something felt... different.
"Ma..." I murmured groggily, blinking my eyes open. "You okay?"
She let out a soft sigh, shifting slightly as she lay on her side, her body wrapped around her pregnancy pillow. "Mmm... yeah, I think so."
"Think so?" I teased, propping myself up on my elbow. My eyes drifted down to her belly, and I swear it looked bigger than it did yesterday.
"Damn, girl," I said, half-laughing. "Did you swallow a watermelon overnight?"
Amahle turned her head to glare at me, though the corners of her mouth twitched like she was fighting a smile. "Ha-ha. Very funny, Joshua."
I grinned, reaching out to place a hand on her stomach. "No, for real, though. She had a growth spurt or somethin'. Look at you. You're huge, ma!"
"Ugh, Don't remind me," she groaned, sitting up slowly. "Your daughter decided to party all night, and now I feel like I've been hit by a truck. My back hurts, my feet are swollen, I gotta pee every hour or less and I think I need a forklift to get out of bed."
I chuckled, leaning over to kiss her shoulder. "That's that third-trimester life, huh? Doc said it was coming."
"Yeah, well, Doc didn't say it would happen overnight," she muttered, rubbing her back as she swung her legs over the side of the bed.
I got up and walked over to her side, kneeling down to help her slide on her slippers. "Alright, let's get you moving slow and steady, mama. You need somethin'? Water? Food? A spa day?"
She smiled softly, brushing her fingers through my messy curls. "Just some breakfast and a foot rub later. I'll survive."
"As long as you know I got you," I said, helping her stand. She leaned against me for support, and I couldn't help but marvel at how beautiful she looked, even in this tired, uncomfortable state.
