Summary: The war is over, and the Paladins of Voltron are finally home. As they gather to celebrate New Year's Eve together on Earth, Pidge and Y/N navigate their feelings amidst fireworks, laughter, and the hope of new beginnings.
Rating: General(PLUS Allura is here because I miss the girl 💔)
The Holt family's backyard glowed with the soft twinkle of string lights, a stark contrast to the starry expanse Y/N had grown used to seeing aboard the Castle of Lions and the Atlas. It was strange to be back on Earth, surrounded by the chatter of friends and family rather than the constant hum of intergalactic war. Strange, but comforting.
Y/N adjusted her jacket against the winter chill and took a sip of hot cocoa, her gaze scanning the backyard. Lance and Keith were off to the side, bickering over the proper way to light sparklers. Hunk was by the firepit, laughing with Allura and Coran about the quirks of Earth holidays while Romelle was messing around with Bae Bae and Shiro stood near the house, quietly chatting with Pidge's mom.
And then there was Pidge.
She stood near the old oak tree, bundled in her favorite green jacket, her glasses fogged up from the cold. She was fiddling with a small device in her hands—probably something she'd whipped up in the last five minutes. Y/N smiled softly, her heart tugging at the sight.
Pidge caught her staring. "What?" she called out, grinning as she made her way over.
"Nothing," Y/N replied, trying to play it cool. "Just wondering if that thing you're working on is going to explode."
Pidge rolled her eyes, shoving the device into her pocket. "Ha-ha. It's just a timer for the fireworks. I didn't trust Lance not to set them off early."
"That's fair." Y/N chuckled, feeling her cheeks warm despite the cold. "It's nice to see everyone like this. Normal, you know?"
"Yeah." Pidge's smile softened. "It feels... surreal. Like I'm still waiting for someone to tell us we need to jump into a lion and save the day."
Y/N nodded, her gaze dropping to the ground. "I guess I'm still figuring out how to live without that constant urgency. But being here, with all of you, it helps."
Pidge hesitated for a moment before reaching out and taking Y/N's hand. The gesture was small, but it sent a jolt through Y/N's entire being.
"Hey," Pidge said softly, her voice barely audible over the laughter and chatter around them. "You're not alone in this, okay? We've got each other. Always."
Y/N looked up, her breath hitching as she met Pidge's warm brown eyes. She wanted to say something, anything, but the words caught in her throat.
Before she could respond, Lance's voice cut through the air.
"Alright, everyone! Five minutes until midnight!"
The group gathered near the firepit, mugs of cocoa in hand as they counted down the minutes. Pidge and Y/N stayed close, their hands brushing occasionally, sending sparks of warmth through Y/N despite the cold.
As the countdown began—"Ten! Nine! Eight!"—Pidge turned to Y/N, her cheeks tinged pink.
"Hey, Y/N?"
"Yeah?"
"Can I—" Pidge hesitated, glancing away before meeting Y/N's gaze again. "Can I kiss you? You know, for New Year's?"
Y/N's heart nearly stopped. For a moment, the world seemed to fade away, the voices around them muffled as she focused solely on the girl in front of her.
"Yes," she whispered, barely able to get the word out.
"Three! Two! One! Happy New Year!"
As the fireworks lit up the sky, Pidge leaned in, her lips brushing softly against Y/N's. The kiss was brief but perfect, filled with unspoken promises and the hope of new beginnings, hands intertwined.
When they pulled apart, Pidge was grinning, her eyes sparkling more brightly than the fireworks overhead.
"Happy New Year, Y/N," she said softly.
"Happy New Year, Katie," Y/N replied, her heart full for the first time in what felt like forever.
Around them, their friends laughed and cheered, but for Y/N and Pidge, the world had narrowed to just the two of them, standing together beneath a sky full of stars and possibilities.
