. . .
As the sun began to peek over the horizon, painting the sky in soft morning hues of orange and yellow, a pair plunged into the sea.
Lo'ak and Fay'tari had woken up well before the rest of the clan.
An early start was the only way to catch the best breakfast— after the waves had thrashed through the night and pushed the fish towards the shore, and before the water became crowded with other townspeople.
Perched on a nearby rock, Fay'tari leaned forward, her eyes sharp as she felt the familiar tug at her line. Lo'ak, still adjusting the bait on his hook, didn't notice at first. But when the water beneath her shimmered with movement, he looked up just in time to see her reel in a massive fish—a shimmering creature with scales that glinted like sapphires.
Lo'ak blinked, a scowl immediately forming. "You've got to be kidding me," he muttered under his breath, eyeing the impressive catch.
The girl smirked, lifting the fish out of the water with a smug grin. "Looks like I win this round," she teased.
Lo'ak rolled his eyes, tugging at his own line. "Yeah, yeah. You just wait, Fay." he grumbled, hoping for a last-minute miracle.
But no such miracle came. The fish he caught was smaller—far smaller—than hers, and he couldn't help but mope in defeat.
"You just got lucky."
Faytari's grin only widened, "You know, you can't just say that every time and hope that'll change anything. You have to actually try—"
Before she could say anything more, a figure approached the two from a distance and interrupted what was bound to be another pointless fight.
It was Jake.
The two exchanged a quick glance before they both slowly swam back toward the shore, pulling their catches onto the sand. All Jake did was motion that they follow him back to the village— which they did, of course, but neither could tell whether what they were walking into was an intervention against their competitive behaviour or something different entirely. Jake's face wasn't clear; he seemed serious, but he was always serious.
When they reached the hut, they found a much larger crowd than expected. The Sully children all stood beside their mother, who stood silently, her expression unreadable. On the opposite end of the room was Tsireya, Au'nung and their parents, too.
Lo'ak and Fay'tari glanced at each other, a similar thought filtering towards the front of their minds—
What did we do this time?
Jake was the first to speak.
"We received a message this morning, from—" he paused, looking towards Neytiri, who just hung her head. "From the forest."
