A N A N Y A

"Happy birthday in advance, Anu," Aarohi said on the call with her usual cheerful voice. I weakly smiled and said, "Thanks."

"So, are you coming tomorrow? We'll all celebrate your birthday. Ansh and Aveline are still here after my delivery, they'll leave soon."

I stared at the blank ceiling, trying to find an excuse not to celebrate my birthday. To be honest, I don't even want to celebrate my birthdays anymore. Why should I? Celebrate my birthday because... Oh! I survived this year!

This year my life was a rollercoaster ride. I don't know what will happen when I turn 26 or the year after that. What more is left for me to see?

"Ananya... you still there?" Aarohi asked. I snapped out of my thoughts and muttered, "Yes... I'll try to come... I'm not sure." She hummed, and after chatting a bit more, I ended the call and put the phone on the table.

I still couldn't get over the kiss. It's been two days, and I've been trying to avoid him. Maybe I was crazy to allow the kiss and even kiss him back. It wasn't his fault but mine for getting close to him.

After the incident in Italy, I realized I had grown soft towards him again. I started caring about him, and that was my big mistake.

He will not change.

Men do not change.

He will do something again that will shatter me into pieces. One thing I learned about him is that he will take whatever revenge he's planning.

He loves his family too much, and I don't have a problem with that, but it's dangerous. The way his eyes turned dark that day when I absentmindedly disrespected his parents, he was ready to kill me the next moment.

So, if a complicated situation arises, he won't hesitate to take my life. That's how dangerous he is for me, and it's better for me to stay away from him.

I left my cabin and looked at my wristwatch. "Shit...the board meeting," I cursed under my breath and ran towards the elevator.

"Hold it!" I called to whoever was inside as the elevator was about to close. I caught my breath, and the door shut. I cursed underneath my breath, but after a few seconds, the door opened again, revealing a tall young foreign man.

"Thank you," I said politely and was about to press the button for my floor when he asked, "Which floor?" His voice was so deep that it almost made me shiver uncomfortably, so I kept my distance.

"5th," I answered. He pressed the button, and the lift started rising. I fidgeted with my fingers and looked at my wristwatch—I was late for the meeting.

A few people entered the elevator on the 4th floor, and I was pushed back towards the man. I nervously glanced at my wristwatch again.

As the elevator opened on the 5th floor, I rushed out but felt a painful tug on my hair. I looked back to see a few strands of my hair were stuck on his black shirt button.
