CHAPTER SIXTY

No one was answering her calls. Cassie had tried each of them multiple times from Rafe's phone, to no response.
She thought at first maybe they just weren't sure of the unknown number, but she thought eventually they'd catch on when that unknown number had repeatedly called all of them. But that just wasn't the case.
She didn't know where they were, if they found JJ, or Groff. If things were good, or bad. She was just trying to figure out what to do now— in the present moment.
Rafe decided going back to her house was a bad idea, as he'd heard around town that Shoupe was starting to really crack down on finding JJ. And they'd likely find to the house first.
But Cassie didn't know when she'd be back there. And knowing cops could likely gather a warrant to search the place, she didn't like knowing that the gun from Venezuela was sitting under her bed in a box.
So Rafe told her to be in and out as he dropped her off in the driveway. She did as she was told, running right up the stairs to her bedroom, grabbing the gun and hiding it within a backpack, and coming right back out.
And then he took her to his place, told her he'd keep trying to reach Sarah, and that there was nothing they could do right now.
She walked inside after him, her arms covered in goosebumps as the cold air conditioning hit her skin. She felt disgusting, covered in dirt, mud underneath her fingernails, her hair tangled and matted down to the sweat on her neck and the tears that once graced her cheeks.
For once, she welcomed the open, tall ceilings of Rafe's house. Where at one point, she considered them unwelcoming and cold, being locked in a casket would keep her from ever wanting to be in a tight space ever again.
Rafe flipped on a few lights, dropping his keys on the counter. "Do you want anything?" He asked, nodding towards his fridge before he scratched behind his ear.
Cassie started to shake her head no, but that was a lie. "I'll have a water."
Rafe nodded casually before bending down to the smaller, second fridge in his kitchen, that housed strictly water bottles. As he handed it to her, he gestured for her to turn around. "Let me look at your head."
Cassie turned around, swallowing harshly as she felt Rafe step closer to her. He gently moved her hair out of the way. "It's not bleeding anymore. He must've just cut you. Do you feel like you have a concussion?" He asked.
She turned back around to face him and shrugged. "What does a concussion feel like?"
He scratches his eyebrow. "Are you dizzy?"
She shakes her head no.
"Do you know how long you were out?"
She shakes her head no again.
Rafe shrugs, inconclusive. "If it's still bothering you in the morning you should go to the hospital."
Cassie let out a small scoff. "All of this bullshit and I still don't have health insurance."
He looked at her, not sure if he should laugh with her. Though he was grateful that she broke the tension. "I still have stuff you can put on it though." He nodded toward the hall.
