13. Prove It.

I waited in anticipation on my sofa. Satomi should be here soon. Maybe I was too eager.

"Are you sure she's coming?" I asked Max.

"Don't worry, Hattie. She'll be here, just give her- she's here." He answered making me stand up abruptly. I rushed over to the door and opened it, revealing the short woman in her cloak again. Her hood was up once again and only did she take it off when she entered my house.

"Please, sit," I smiled as I motioned to the sofa next to Max. Max stood up, and I put a hand out to stop him going any further.

"Where do you think you're going?" I asked.

"Outside? To give you some privacy.." He answered, I laughed and shook my head.

"Sit back down, you might as well be in here, you're just going to listen in anyway." I said, Satomi smiled slightly at my comment.

"You're not stupid, are you my child?" She said, although it sounded more like a question, I chose to just smile at her.

"Okay so, I just have a few questions for you Satomi." I began as I cleared my throat. "Can I train by myself or does it have to be with Brett?"

"You will need someone to teach you how to fight, Hattie. Your powers won't work on everybody.." She answered. "You've got to think of that possibility. Of course there is the exception of a neuro kitsune's 'mate', as some would call it, but the real word is Yuanfen. The person your powers don't work on is the person you are destined to be with. You see, it's all about survival."

I stared at the coffee table, ignoring the rest of what Satomi was talking about. The person my powers don't work on is my mate?

"Oh god," I mumbled as I began to feel physically sick.

"Are you alright, Hattie?" Max asked, I looked at him, I don't know if I was scowling or cringing but there was an unpleasant look on my face.

"C-can my mate or Yuanfen, be another supernatural creature? Could it be a werewolf?" I questioned, ignoring Max's question. Of course I'm not okay.

"Yes, although that would be very unfortunate as foxes-"

"Foxes and wolves don't get along. I know," I finished, my eyes darting around my living room. "I know who my mate is.."

"Come again?" Max asked as he laughed slightly.

"My powers don't work on Brett!" I shouted, "why wouldn't they work on him?"

"You think Brett's your mate..." Satomi whispered and I nodded frantically.

"Oh why does this have to happen to me?" I asked, more to myself than anything.

"That makes sense.." Max said, "but he's back with Katherine."

"He's back with my worst enemy.." I laughed angrily.

"Why is she your worst enemy?" Satomi asked making me roll my eyes.

"My dad and her dad used to be best friends, they were in the army together, she used to be my best friend, but then my dad never came home, and her's did. She loved to rub that in my face, my dad had died saving her dad and she tormented me because of it." I explained, "that's why she's my worst enemy."

Satomi and Max were silent.

"You should tell Brett." Satomi said after a few moments. I immediately stood up, shaking my head.

"No, if he's happy with her then I can't ruin it. He doesn't have to know-"

"If you don't tell him, I will." Max stated. "It should come from you."
