As the words left his lips the loud music was drowned out, it seemed to fade out, but the room wasn't silent, no, my heart beating against my chest so hard it made Brett smile as he could hear it. I couldn't tear my eyes away from his, so blue and intoxicating. Until a pounding in my head so extreme made me scream. I clutched at my head as I lowered to the ground. Brett instantly kneeled beside me, asking me what was wrong. But I couldn't answer him. Something wasn't right.
"It hurts," I breathed. I know Brett heard me because he picked me up off the floor. My legs didn't want to move and once he realised he picked me up bridal style. He carried me through the people on the dance floor. The scene was bound to raise some questions. He carried me out of the room and into a dark corridor off one of the side doors that we weren't supposed to use tonight. The lights flickered on as I flailed out of his arms and landed on the floor with a thump.
"Hattie, what is it? What's wrong?" He questioned as he knelt down beside me. My eyes were shut tight. They were burning. My whole body felt like it was on fire. "Hattie, look at me." I felt his hand rest on my arm to try and encourage me but he quickly retracted his hand with a hiss. Did I burn him?
"Shit!" He shouted. I opened my eyes and looked at Brett. His hand was steaming. Brett's worried and confused eyes met mine. His mouth dropped open.
"Hattie, your eyes.." He grumbled making me want to cry.
"What?" I croaked out, my head felt like it was about to explode.
"They're.. They're glowing!" He informed me, "purple!"
Purple?
"Brett what's going on?" I managed to ask as I tried to control my breathing. It was at that moment I remembered what Satomi had said. I needed to train my body to control myself, or my powers would destroy me from the inside out. "Fight me."
"What?" Brett asked as I struggled to push myself up off the floor. Once standing, Brett shook his head. "I'm not going to fight you! Not when you're like this!"
"Just trust me Brett!" I shouted at him. "Please!"
Brett looked uneasy, but he changed nevertheless. His teeth poked out from his lips. His eyes glowed orange. His already long fingers now had sharp claws, dangerously awaiting to be used at the tips of his fingers.
"Are you sure?" He asked me. His voice was deep. I nodded as I took a step forwards. Brett growled before he swung his left arm towards me. I instantly blocked his left swing and placed my hand against his chest. He flew backwards making me almost squeal with shock.
Brett slid across the floor, I could tell he was annoyed by the way he jumped up and started walking towards me. I could tell he was angry by the huffs he let out with every step. I felt fine now. Satomi was right. I needed to train with Brett. But not like this. He's too angry.
"Brett, calm down." I stated warningly. Who knows how this could go. Maybe he needs to learn control. He didn't ease up. I didn't want to fight him anymore. I didn't need to. "Brett please sto-"
I cut myself off with a groan as his claws sliced through my abdomen. I immediately started to cough up blood as I dropped to the floor. Brett was surprised by his actions.
"Brett!" Someone shouted, I couldn't tell who it was, my vision was going blurry, but not because I was crying. I felt dizzy. Faint, even. "What have you done?" Was the last thing I heard before it all went black.
-------
I couldn't open my eyes. I knew I was alive though. Brett's worried voice filled my ears as I laid there.
