Why is it that the universe must spite you? You ask for safety and receive war, you beg for companionship and receive them dead, you plead for dreams and get stuck with nightmares.

Really, at this point, you're beginning to spite the stars anytime you see them, just to see how they like it.

It hasn't been very effective.

Nevertheless, you would say that things had been looking up lately.

Which, in the typical fashion of the universe, is when things go wrong.

After living a nomadic life since you're...escape seven years ago, you had run into a Mandalorian wandering a city planet on the Outer Rim a few months ago. Well, more accurately, his child ran into you.

You had felt him in the Force. No matter how much you pushed it away and tried to ignore its existence, the child was bright. He shone like a literal light in the Force, calling out to you in a way the Force never sang before. You couldn't help but be drawn to it, following the life within you that horrified you to the child that called.

You found him on a quiet street, empty but for the people who got off late at work or were on their way. Nothing stood out at first except for the Force getting louder, leading you to the bright bright bright life in the Force.

You hadn't been paying much attention to anything around you, so to say you were surprised when something ran into your boot from your right would be a bit of an understatement. You were not as attuned to the Force as you had once been other than the odd morning of meditation and your constant grasp of your shields, so when the light was right there you startled.

When you had looked down, you found a child as tall as your shin and wrapped in beige robes. His skin was green and wrinkly, little white wisps of hair floating around large pointed ears. But his eyes are what drew you in. They were big and brown and bright. That same expression was reflected in the Force as he gazed up at you with the warmth of familiarity you were now forced to feel as well.

Kneeling to pick up the child, you brought him close with an easy smile.

"Hello, there." You murmured, seeing the way he mimicked your grin. You felt your heart begin to melt. "What's your name?"

Grogu!

"Grogu, eh? That's a good one. Mine's Y/n."

Y/n, he repeated into the Force, the first crack in your mental shields since...well, since that place. You found that, for a moment, you did not hate it.

"That's right." You said, glancing around. "You're not alone out here, are you?" You had not felt the emotions of fear and loss from this child, but that might have been because of you. You tried to lower your shields just slightly in order to feel the emotions of those around you. Tiredness and calm were common, not the panic and worry of a lost child.
