The world was upside down. Metal screamed. Glass exploded like tiny stars around them. Rhiley's body slammed against the roof of the SUV, her teeth gritting as blood trickled into her hair. Every nerve in her body screamed danger, adrenaline sharpening her senses to a knife-edge.
"Move!" Fury's voice cut through the chaos, ragged but commanding, as he yanked the laser torch from its mount, slicing through the twisted steel of the driver's side door like it owed him its life.
Rhiley rolled, bracing herself against the floor, fire already dancing across her knuckles, molten and hungry. Sparks crackled from the collision. Smoke stung her eyes. Tires shrieked as the SUV skidded sideways, barely holding together, yet still alive.
A shadow moved ahead — precise, deliberate. The figure was tall, black-clad, completely unreadable. The world seemed to slow around it, like the air itself had frozen in awe and fear.
"What the hell—" Rhiley whispered, heart hammering in rhythm with the pounding metal of the wreckage around them.
The figure raised an arm, launching a device that latched onto the SUV's hood with a magnetic thunk.
She looked at Fury, "Are you done?" He had burned through the concrete. "Go!"
"Are you an idiot?" Fury looked back at her.
"Obviously." She muttered, "I'll be fine. Go! I'll hold whatever that is back."
Fury didn't hesitate. Knowing farewell where the argument would go. He was gone before the next explosion ripped through everything. Fire licked the night, glass rained like knives, and the vehicle flipped, rolling end over end. Gravity betrayed them, twisting bodies and metal alike. Rhiley slammed against the roof, then the side window, then the floor, tasting copper and smoke. Pain flared, sharp and immediate, but she didn't slow. She couldn't.
Rhiley's knees hit the asphalt. Sparks danced across the crumpled frame around her as she threw herself free, fire flaring in her palms, shielding them from the worst of the wreckage. She staggered, every breath a battle, but her body hummed with power, ready to strike.
Through the smoke, the figure remained. Silent. Perfect. Deadly. Arm raised, ready to fire again.
Rhiley bared her teeth. Her eyes blazed with molten light, her fingers twitching with kinetic energy. "Round two," she growled, voice low and dangerous, "then."
The thing didn't wait for hesitation. Neither would she.
A figure emerged from the shadows. Silent. Unyielding. Every step deliberate, every motion fluid and precise. He didn't speak. He didn't hesitate. He just came, and the sheer force of his presence made the air between them feel heavy.
Rhiley's fingers flared, sparks crawling along her skin. She threw up a shimmering barrier, molten energy rippling around her. The figure stopped for a fraction of a second—then advanced again, testing her defenses.
She hurled debris, lifting chunks of pavement with her power. They clanged and shattered against his metal arm, but he kept coming. No hesitation. No expression. Only the cold, relentless precision of someone trained to kill.
She surged forward, energy whipping from her hands. He dodged, pivoted, and came at her with inhuman speed, striking at the edge of her shield. Sparks erupted, concrete splintered, and she stumbled back, breath ragged, power flaring harder than she intended.
The street around them became a blur—light against steel, fire against molten energy. She slammed a fire hydrant between them, spraying water like a glittering curtain, but he passed through it as if it weren't there.
