We arrived at Duke and got out of the car, memories flooded in as I took in the sights and sounds of the campus "so Isobel was officially employed by the anthropology department given most paranormal phenomenon has rounded folklore" Alaric said as he opened the Antho department door and showed us in, we came into a sitting area for the students and found a brunette woman rummaging through a set of filing cabinets next to a desk "excuse me, hi, I'm Alaric Saltzman, I called earlier" he stepped towards the woman as Damon and I grinned at each other and looked around.
"Right yes," she closed the cabinet she was looking through and shook Alaric's hand politely "I'm Vanessa Monroe, research assistant comparative to folklore" she smiled at Alaric before turning to Elena, a strange look passed over her face for a split second before she turned back to Alaric "uh, let me just grab Isobel's keys" she pointed back to her desk and gulped visibly.
"These are my friends Elena, Alexandra and Damon" he pointed at each of us "I hope this isn't too much of an imposition" he smiled slightly but her attention was drawn to Damon and I, her eyes wide which caused me to narrow my eyes in her direction.
"Oh please" she said as she slowly opened a desk draw and pulled out a set of keys "Isobel's office is right through there" she gestured to a closed door but didn't move towards it, instead she half sat on her desk and fiddled with the keys "Isobel was one of my first professors, I'm a grad student, she was brilliant and one of the reasons I went into folklore" she blushed in Alaric's direction "uh I have to ask, has there been any news?"
"No, I'm afraid not" Ric said sadly, he shuffled his feet and looked at the ground as he lied through his teeth about his undead vampire wife, who happened to be turned by Damon after I gave her some information about her family line, as Elena biological mother she was a descendant of Katherine and as much as I would've loved ripping the head off of Katherine's descendants it was more fun watching her run around like a headless chicken trying to find more information after I fed her some well timed scraps.
"It's this way" she unlocked the door and let us in first "I'll grab the light, feel free to look around" she smiled at me as I walked passed her, eyeing her suspiciously "it's fascinating isn't it?" I grunted in reply and walked over to one of the bookshelves, I knew that there was something here that belonged to me, an old diary of sorts that I'd given to Isobel after she discovered the truth, the more I fed her information about vampires and the like the more she went insane from curiosity.
"Where'd she go?" Damon asked me when the girl had disappeared and hadn't turned on the lights like she said she would, I glanced over my shoulder and groaned when Vanessa showed up with a loaded crossbow in her hands, she pointed it at Elena and pulled the trigger, in an instant Damon was in front of Elena and I had my hands on Vanessa who was breathing heavily, I glanced at my brother who had the wooden bolt sticking out of his back and then to Ric who had the crossbow that Vanessa had dropped in his hands, my brother would be fine but that didn't mean I wouldn't be any less pissed at the human.
"Now that" I growled in her ear as my vampiric features contorted my face, my fangs grew and my eyes turned dark "was a stupid move" I pushed her out of the office after getting a short nod from Damon and shoved her hard into her desk, knocking papers to the ground, Ric was close behind us as Elena helped Damon extract the bolt from his back.
I pushed Vanessa into her desk chair when she tried to run and I held her by her neck, I may be a little bit pissed about the fact that she had shot my brother "please! I freaked out okay?" She tried to shove me away again but I just held her tighter "alright, you would have done the same thing, it's not possible! Katherine Pierce can't be alive, Damon Salvatore died in 1864 and Alexandra Salvatore died in 1865 at the hands of a mass murderer" she looked at me when I chuckled at that last bit, Katherine did kill me yes and she did destroy my human life but I would hardly call her a mass murderer, that title was too good for her petty killings "I read Isobel's research"
