8 years later,
Paro let out a sigh and sank herself into the chair. The air conditioner was running at full blast, but somehow it still didn’t feel enough. The day had been so hectic. Well, hectic but peaceful. She worked so hard for years to earn this.
Paro opened her lunchbox and frowned a little. The familiar smell of cheese sandwiches filled her nostrils. Her favorite. This must be him, she thought with a small smile.
She hardly took a bite when someone suddenly pushed open the door and rushed in.
"Dr. Chatterjee , you need to assist Dr. Roy immediately. There’s an emergency accident case."
"Oh! Coming in two minutes," Paro said, standing up quickly. She left the lunchbox half open on the table and grabbed her apron and stetho before hurrying out the door.
Reaching Dr. Roy’s chamber, Paro knocked lightly as she entered.
"Dr. Roy," she said, catching her breath, "I heard there’s an emergency case?"
"Ah, Dr. Chatterjee , yes," he replied, adjusting his glasses. "A patient was found unconscious on the road. Seems like he hit his head quite badly. Still unresponsive. We’ve done a few scans. He needs a brain surgery and it has to be done immediately. I thought you might want to assist in this one."
"Of course, sir. I’d love to," Paro replied quickly.
"Great. Come with me."
They walked down the corridor as the sound of hurried footsteps echoed throughout the floor.
As they stepped inside the patient's room, Paro’s eyes moved to the figure lying still on the hospital bed. His back was turned toward the door, and a nurse was checking the bruises on his leg. His clothes were stained in blood. From the looks of it, he’d been hit pretty hard.
Paro exhaled slowly. If this had been a few years ago, she would’ve been nervous. But not now. In the past few years, she had handled many such cases. She had seen much worse than this.
Dr. Roy walked over to speak with the nurse and the other doctor present in the room. After a few minutes, he returned to her with a patient file in his hand.
"There’s a small subdural hematoma in the frontal lobe. Not that deep but needs to be drained. Left clavicle is fractured, and a couple of broken ribs. His family has been informed. Here, have a look at the case details. We’ll start OT in an hour."
Paro nodded as she took the file from him and opened it and let out a quiet huff. The surgery wasn't very critical but like all, came with its own risks. She read the report a couple more times, making mental notes as she flipped through the attached scans.
After about ten minutes, Paro closed the file and went towards her chamber to get prepared for the surgery.
……….
Paro entered the operation theatre after scrubbing in. Walking to the patient’s side she stood beside the operating table, waiting for Dr. Roy to begin.
Dr. Roy gave a few instructions to the junior doctor standing across from him, then asked the nurse to check vitals again. As he got ready to make the first incision, Paro’s eyes, almost by habit, drifted to the patient's face.
And just like that.. she froze.
Paro felt breath hitched and hands went cold despite the gloves. For a few seconds, her brain refused to believe what she was seeing.
No. NO! It couldn't be.
She blinked once. Then again. Her heart started pounding so fast she could hear it in her ears. It felt like the ground beneath her shifted. Her mouth had gone dry, and she stood frozen, her eyes fixed on his face.
