As she stepped out, a wave of relief washed over her. At least Aaliya would be there too.
“Did you talk to Dr. NV?” Paro turned back, startled to find Aaliya standing right behind her, already reading her expression.
Paro nodded. “Yeah.”
Aaliya gave her a knowing look, a half-smile tugging at her lips. “Well, it’s not all bad. Kind of feels like med school again. Fieldwork, patients asking weird questions…” She paused, noticing Paro was absent minded. She stepped closer and gave Paro an assuring smile. “Paro, no matter what, I’m with you. Always.”
Listening to her, Paro let out a genuine smile.
NEXT DAY
“Are you sure this one?” Paro asked one of the team members, her eyes fixed on the big iron gate that read “Happy Home.”
“Yes, ma’am. This one,” the man confirmed.
Paro paused for a moment. She had been here three years ago with Preeti. She knew this shelter belonged to Sameer. And that meant…
Her fingers tightened slightly around the bag she was holding. But that didn’t necessarily mean his friend would be here too. She tried to push the thought away. She was here for work, and she needed to act professionally.
“What are you doing there? Come!” Aaliya called, turning back to see Paro still standing near the gate. Pushing down her thoughts, Paro followed her.
Inside, the atmosphere was lively. Children were running around, their laughter spreading throughout the place while old women sat in corners, talking with each other or simply watching around with curious eyes.
Suddenly a middle-aged woman came forward and welcomed them warmly. There were four of them in the team, and it didn’t take long before they had set up everything and begun their work.
“Do you give injections?” a girl whispered with wide, fearful eyes, peeking over the table.
Paro tried not to laugh. “Only to naughty kids,” she said, matching the girl’s tone.
“I am a good girl,” she said defensively.
“Then you’re safe,” Paro replied with a small smile as she checked a little girl’s throat.
Nearby, an elderly woman leaned closer, “You should smile a bit more.” she said in a gently instructive tone.
Paro just gave a half smile and resumed her work, not knowing what to say.
Suddenly another voice cut through the noise.
“Aditya ! My boy? What are you doing? Come here!”
“I’m coming,” Adi said, his voice a bit louder as he entered the room.
Aaliya turned back and stopped for a moment. “Wait… weren’t you admitted to LRS Hospital a couple of months ago?” she asked, raising her brows slightly.
Adi looked at her. “Yeah, that was me,” he said, giving a quick nod.
“I was your doctor,” Aaliya said with a warm tone. “You didn’t come for any follow-up by the way. How are you doing now?”
“I’m good,” Adi said in a flat tone.
“No, you’re not,” the old woman said in a loud, concerned voice. “Now go to that doctor,” she said, pointing at Paro. “She’ll check you.”
Adi, who was still standing near the doorway, turned aside and froze at the realization of who she was. His shoulders tensed and breath caught in his throat.
