Next morning,
Adi stepped out of the shower with a towel wrapped in his lower body, steam trailing behind him as he walked into the bedroom. His tanned upper body was on display, fresh water droplets glistening on his abs.
His eyes fell upon Paro, sitting on the bed, her eyes fixed on the floor. She was already dressed up. “ Too eager to go.” Adi thought in his mind, and somehow that irritated him.
If only everything was in his hand, he wouldn't let her go anywhere, nor would he himself leave the house. But he couldn't take the risk, not for now. Already his brother was suspecting him.
Paro was lost in her own world. After five long days, she would finally be able to go outside, to see the world, to go to her classes again. Even if the freedom was just for a few hours, she was looking forward to it.
Adi saw how she was comparatively less gloomy this morning. He stood there for a moment, watching her.
"Paro”, Adi called her, trying to sound polite, hoping that she would look at him.
The sudden conscious demeanor in Paro told Adi that she didn't even notice he was standing there for a while, her discomfort was clear as soon as she felt his presence. Adi rubbed his temple with one of his hands to control his anger. Forcing a smile on his lips, he walked towards her.
Paro felt a knot in her stomach as he approached. Without a word, he took her hand and pulled her onto his lap. Paro tensed up, her heart racing.
Adi seemed oblivious to her unease, or he simply didn't care. “ Have you had your breakfast?” He whispered, his lips touching her earlobe. Paro didn't want to reply but she knew that would only lead to worse consequences. She only nodded her head in response.
“Good girl”. Adi replied, leaving a peck on her cheek. He suddenly took out a chain with a pendant from the nearer wardrobe and slowly, almost tenderly, wrapped it around her neck.
"Don't remove this, hmm? It will remind you of me" he murmured, his voice soft but clearly held a possessive warning.
Paro shivered. She felt trapped, like a bird in a cage. She had an idea of why he would make her wear that. Probably it had a tracker. She never saw one but there were a lot of things she was seeing for the first time. She wasn't surprised by anything, anymore.
Irritated, she wanted to pull away, but Paro knew it would only make things worse.
"Understood?" Adi asked, his fingers brushing her hair.
Paro nodded again.
Pleased with his reaction, Adi kissed on top of her head again and took a long sniff of her neck before making her sit beside him.
“ Wait for me. I will be ready in a minute,” Adi left the room to get ready.
Paro bit her lip, holding back tears. Each one of his actions made her feel humiliated. To her, it was a nightmare she couldn't wake up from.
“ Let's go.” Adi came out after a while and led Paro outside. Paro took a deep breath, as the fresh air hit her after almost a week. She climbed into the car quickly, after realizing Adi was watching her.
The drive was silent, the air was too tense, almost suffocating. Paro stared out the window, trying to make sense of where they were. She realized Adi had been driving for a while. They were almost two hours away from the city.
"Were we so far out?" she asked quietly in her mind.
Adi glanced at her, a smirk on his lips.
"I told you, I need to keep you safe. Away from distractions."
Paro realized she let those words out loud. Her heart sank. She felt even more isolated than before. After 30 more minutes, they pulled up near her institution and Adi stopped the car.
"Be a good girl and I'll be back to pick you up," he said, his tone leaving no room for argument.
"Remember what I told you, Paro. Don't make me regret giving you this little freedom."
"Okay." Paro soon replied, too eager to get rid of him. Pulling Paro towards him, Adi placed a kiss near her lips and opened the door for her. Paro came out immediately and almost ran towards the building without looking back.
With one last dissatisfied look, Adi drove away.
……..
Even though it was less than a week since she last attended classes, Paro felt everything alien around her. She felt her eyes burnt as soon as she remembered Rishabh.
Paro suddenly felt exhausted and wanted to hide somewhere.
“ Paro”, Hearing a girly voice Paro looked back to find Rosey, coming towards her smiling lightly.
“ How are you, girl? Why didn't you attend classes?” Rosey asked, slightly concerned.
Rosey was a calm, timid girl. Paro liked her. Even though they weren't really friends, they shared greetings and notes a few times. She liked that girl.
“ I… I went home.” Paro said, nervous. That's the quickest lie she could come up with.
Suddenly Rosey pulled her into a warm hug.
“ I can understand your situation. We all were really concerned for him. And you and Rishabh were…. pretty close so I know it must be difficult for you.” Rosey said the last words with a slight pause, not sure how Paro would react.
“ Ye.. yeah.” Paro tried to take a deep breath to control her tears.
“ You know all of us visited Lifecare hospital yesterday, to see him. I thought you would be there. But I couldn't see you. God knows how all of these happened. Rishabh is such a good man. Why would someone do that to him?
I only heard that it's one of their business rivalries. Do you know anything? Paro…. Paro?”
Rosey stopped after realizing that Paro was deeply thinking about something.
Paro was still stuck at two of her words ‘Rishabh,’ and ‘Lifecare hospital’.
By Rosey’s words, Paro understood, it wasn't still public how all of these happened and she couldn't be more thankful.
She knew that hospital. It was only 20 minutes away from here. The heart thumped with anxiety as she knew at that very moment what she wanted to do. It was a huge risk and if Adi came to know about it, she knew what the possible consequences could be. A shiver ran down her spine thinking about that. But she didn't want to think about that. Not now. She had to visit Rishabh. At least for once. She couldn't live with that guilt anymore.
Suddenly her eyes fell on her pendant. Thinking for a moment she looked at Rosey who was already looking at her.
“ Rosey, I need help,” Paro said, the urgency clear in her voice.
“ Yes, tell me,” Rosey replied quickly.
“ I… I am going to visit Rishabh now.” Paro declared.
“ Yes, do you want me to join you,” Rosey asked, without letting her finish.
“ No.. no,” Paro said hurriedly. “ I… I just want you to keep my pendant with you. I will be back within a few hours. Before the class ends. You will be in class, right?” Paro looked at her with hope in her eyes.
Listening to her request, Rosey looked at her with furrowing eyebrows.
“ Yes.. yeah sure.” She replied, surprised by Paro's strange demand.
“ Thank you so much, Rosey. I will be back.” Paro gave Rosey a quick thankful hug. Leaving her pendant to Rosey she quickly came out of the building and took a cab.
It didn't matter what the consequences would be. She’d visit Rishabh today. At any cost.
