Kwes passed her the white envelope and she already knew.

Money was inside.

Her eyes peeked in, then back at him like she was about to scold him. "Fifty add touzen fi buy the pickney grocery? Yuh hand light so bwoy?"

He smirked and got in his Benz.

I was still standing with Nana.

"You can cook some coconut shrimp for him please," I smiled.

"I could," she said, folding the envelope and slipping it into her apron, "but I'm not. This moment a fi yuh and yuh family. Be the first to give him shrimp. Him will always remember dat."

She smiled wide, rolling her false teeth around in her mouth. The dentures clicked against her teeth.

"Okay..." I agreed.

Kwes kept creeping the car back. His way of hurrying me out.

"But bwoy, yuh nuh have patience? Yuh cya wait five more minutes?"

I turned to see him sitting in the driver's seat, one elbow out the window, tapping his thumb on the wheel like he'd been there forever.

"Him miserable essi," I laughed.

He laughed too, at Nana's words, then leaned out the car.

Nana sucked her teeth, grinning. "No damn patience Jamaican man nuh have" Then she glanced at me. "Where uno a go now?"

"We meeting with our lawyers." My voice was a little flat. Just saying the word "lawyer" made my stomach tighten.

Nana's face twisted up.

"Lawyer?"

"Yuh know who trying fi fight fi joint custody..."

"Janet?" Her face curled in disgust. "Mi cya tek dat woman. She fava when dog just shit and it hot."

"Nana!" I busted out laughing. "God forgive yuh."

She looked up at the sky, hand raised like she and the Lord were on good terms. "Him know mi heart."
