Winona had been forced to do chores once she got home, even though it was late. Her dad was on the couch with a beer, watching the tv, while her mother was out.
Even though she was tired and wanted to sleep, she had to obey her dad, and sat on the kitchen floor to scrub it.
She stood up once someone rang the doorbell, and made sure she looked fine before opening the door.
Her heart stopped at the sight that met her.
"Who is it?" Her dad asked from the living room, but stood up once he didn't get an answer.
"Oh, good evening, officer. What can I help you with?" He asked the police officer outside the home.
"I just came here to check on you. May I come in?" He asked, before he was let in. Winona felt a tight squeeze in her shoulder as she closed the door, before going back to the kitchen.
"We've got a complaint due to all the yelling that's been heard from here lately, and I just wanted to check if everything was all right." The officer said.
"It's all fine here. Just a few disagreements here and there. We'll make sure to keep it down." Her dad smiled. "That's good to hear." He smiled.
He then dismissed himself to go to the bathroom, probably to wash his face and try to sober up, and the officer took this chance to speak with the girl on the floor.
"Is everything alright with you?" The officer asked, a piece of paper in his hand. "Yes, Officer. Why wouldn't I be?" She smiled up at him.
"Someone told us that you might be in danger. But maybe it was just a misunderstanding." He said. Winona stood up and smiled.
"I'm all fine, Officer. Nothing wrong is going on here." She smiled. The officer smiled, but turned around once her dad was back from the bathroom.
Winona took this as an opportunity to look at the note in his hand, and saw a familiar name listed on the person who reported.
She clenched her fists, but pretended like nothing until the officer was out of the house. Her dad stood with his back against her in the living room.
"I swear I haven't told anyone. I didn't know anything about this." She said, her voice shaking. He walked towards her slowly, neither looking at her nor speaking to her, until he was right in front of her.
He then lifted his hand that held the now empty glass beer bottle, before Winona fell to the floor, bleeding from her head.
"You should have known better than to tattle." He said through gritted teeth, before picking her up through the collar of her sweater.

Winona looked at herself in the mirror, checking for the fifth time to make sure she'd hidden the bruise around her eye with her make up, before she headed out.
Once again was she wearing a sweater, this time hiding more bruised than the day before, and a blue bandana around her head, knotted under her hair to look like a headband, while the rest of her outfit was blue as well.
With her hands in fists, she hurried towards the clearing where the friends were meeting. She'd been ignoring everyone since they met the day before, and several of them had tried to call her.
