It started that evening after he brought her back home.

*sneeze*

"Shukar Alhamdulillah," he muttered under his breath, though his sneeze didn't go unnoticed by the others present at the table

[ Thanks to Allah. ]

Soon after dinner, a knock echoed at his door, followed by his response. "A jaen."

[ Come in. ]

The door handle shrieked under pressure until the door creaked open to let the person in and then closed behind them.

His gaze lifted from the soft glow of his laptop, his eyes meeting hers as she entered the room holding a cup of something... He lifted the laptop and rested it on the bed, before she walked over and placed the cup on his nightstand.

"Ami ne bhijwaya hai...Kahwa." She finally spoke up as she took a step back to keep a respectful distance between them.

[ Mother sent it...herbal tea. ]

"Thank you," was all that he could mutter.

"You're welcome," Her response was as bland as his before she turned and pulled the door open, and she was out.

He stared at the liquid inside the cup and exhaled softly.

He was indeed reckless today,

He could've brought his umbrella with him.

*sneeze*

"ShukarAlhamdulillah. I shouldn't be so reckless after all." With another weary sigh, he grabbed the cup's handle and brought the hot steaming liquid to his mouth and took a long sip, which seemed to soothe his throat and then his insides.

The weather had been oddly cold today, though he couldn't complain much considering the heat from last week.

The Kehwa was amazing, considering his current situation and the weather outside. He could equally taste Saunf, elaichi, and darcheeni.

...

Footsteps echoed, a pair of flats clicking against the marble staircase until they came to a halt at the last step and then continued their journey to the dining room to see her mother setting the table up for breakfast.

"Main bhi help karwati hun, Ami." Her hands reached out to grab the hotpot from her mother's hands and placed it in the center of the table.

[ I'll also help, Mom. ]

"Hospital jana hai aj?" Her mother queried while setting down the plates before every seat.

[ Do you have to go to the Hospital today? ]

"Ji, kyun?"-Amna

[ Yes, why? ]

"Raat saari barish hoti rahi his aur bahir to selaab aya hua hai. Tumhe nahin pata?" Her mother's response caught her off guard.

[ It has been raining all night, and the outside has become flooded. Don't you know? ]

All of a sudden? It was a normal rain yesterday when she came home...

"Main to kehti hun ke aj na hi jao hospital. koi important patient to nahin hai na?" Her Chachi chimed in, bringing in some fruits.

[ I say that you don't go to the hospital today. There are no important patients there, right? ]

"Hain to nahin, lekin..." She was reluctant to take a leave, considering she had taken a few already because of her nikah.

[ There are none, but... ]

"As Salaam o Alaikum." A low, gravelly voice rumbled, bringing their conversation to a halt

[Peace be upon you. ]

"Wa Alaikum Salam, Azlaan beta." Both women replied in unison with kind smiles.

[ Peace be upon you, too, Azlaan son. ]

" Wa Alikum Salaam." Her voice was low, but it didn't go unheard by him as he took his seat.

His head raised as he suddenly remembered something and looked up at his Tayi Ami.

"Kahwe ke liay shukria, Tayi Ami." He thanked her with a kind yet subtle smile.

[ Thanks for the herbal tea, Aunt. ]

Humna's brows knitted in a deep, confused frown, "Kon sa kahwa?"

His gaze shifted across the room and landed on two panicked hazel orbs who shifted their direction, and her lashes lowered themselves to avoid his stare.

"Konsa Kahwa, Azlaan?" His mother asked this time.

[ Which herbal tea, Azlaan? ]

"Kuch nahin, Ami... Shayad khwab mein dekha ho aur ab... Khair, chodein." He lied.

[ Nothing, mom... Maybe I saw it in a dream and now... whatever, leave it. ]

Humna's gaze shifted to her daughter, and she smiled.

Soon others started coming in, and the ones to come last were Abd-ar Rahman and Maryam, with Abd-ar Rahman's hand resting on the small of her back. She was only 4 weeks in, and everyone was all over her.

Maryam took a seat beside Amna and  Eman before greeting everyone.

 ...

After confirming the weather outside and requesting leave at the Hospital, Amna was now in her bedroom, removing her jilbab after Duhr prayer while others were downstairs having afternoon tea. The Men also didn't leave for work due to bad weather. When a knock echoed at her door.

Folding her prayer mat and putting it aside, she opened the door to see a maid in her late 40s who came only at this time, once a week, to do the laundry.

"Amna Begum, ap ke liay kuch aya hai, Ayman bhai ne kaha ap ko de dun, kisi bande ne aa ke dia hai." The maid explained in her heavy Punjabi accent.

[ Miss Amna, something came for you, Ayman Brother (security guard) said to give it to you, a man came and gave it to him. ]

Her brows knitted, forming a deep V between her brows. "Ji, shukria Naila Baji." With that, the maid left after a brief nod, and Amna retired back to her bedroom, closing the door behind her.

The envelope appeared to be pretty professional yet unknown regarding the details about the sender or any address. It just simply said — Amna.

Curious, she tore open the seal.

It's been so long since she received anything from him that she didn't think that it could be him.

Once the envelope was opened, Amna pulled out the contents, which were some photocards and a blank, cream-colored folded paper.

Pulling one picture from the stack of a few, she stared at it until everything registered in and her limbs gave out as she stumbled back, knocking over a crystal vase, and the sound echoed all around the mansion. The photocards and the paper fell from her hands as she fell to the ground, a crystal shard stabbing into her palm, but she felt numb to the pain.

*shatter*

"Amna," The whisper escaped his lips before he could stop it.
