Rayne's POV
This is... the real shadow army.
The thought echoed within me—reverent. Disbelieving.
Magic stirred in my core—hot and cold at once. It threaded down my spine and spilled across the pebbled road like oil, thick and alive, pooling beneath my feet.
My silhouette warped—unnatural. Fluid. Fathomless. It stretched outwards, blanketing the entire town square in shadow.
Blue lights shimmered within the void—a constellation of watching eyes.
Then they emerged.
One by one, rising from the abyss.
At the front...
A figure stepped forward, his crimson plume catching the breeze and trailing behind him like a war banner. The shadow of a longsword gleamed at his hip as he took his place at my flank—silent, steady, certain.
Igris.
At that moment, Bellion moved.
He rose to his full height—imposing as ever. The sun at his back cast half his face in shadow, leaving his expression unreadable. No shift. No flicker of emotion.
Just a pause.
Then his voice cut through the silence like a blade.
"You've returned, Igris."
... ?
Igris gave a silent nod—equally restrained.
I blinked, surprised.
They knew each other.
But how?
Igris had served under the demon lord. And from everything I'd learnt, the relationship between Antares and Ashborn wasn't just bad—it was nuclear.
These two shouldn't be allies. Hell, they should be tearing each other apart the second they breathe the same air.
So what's this?
The silent nod. The calm acknowledgement. The complete lack of tension.
None of it made sense.
"You know each other."
Not a question. A fact.
Bellion turned his head, gaze fixed on me. His voice, when it came, was deep and even—devoid of inflection. Yet it carried a weight that made the air sink.
"There was never a time when we did not."
My brows knitted, "What's that supposed to mean?"
A pause.
Then Bellion's gaze flicked, just briefly, towards Igris.
"His station never changed. Only the battlefield."
I glanced at Igris, who remained perfectly still at my side—silent as ever, but somehow... steadying. Like a fixed point in the chaos.
"Are you saying he's one of you?" I asked, cautious now.
Bellion's reply was quiet. Final.
"He always was."
A chill traced down my spine.
I stared at Igris—but for the first time, I wasn't sure how to look at him.
He used to be a certainty. Someone I could trust unconditionally.
