Rayne's POV
"Please..."

"Don't close your eyes."

... Who...?

"Please..."

Thump.

Ahri...

Her heartbreaking cries resonated in the darkness. Pained and miserable. I've heard this before. Burned into my memory. Somewhere. Some time... Long ago.

"Does it still hurt?"

The broken whisper was accompanied by the crackles of flames. Soft fingers carded my hair. Slow and affectionate. But more than anything was the scalding heat dripping on my cheeks. It hurts... Because this tenderness came at a price.

"Hey... Stay with me..."

I swore to protect her. That's the least I could do. Make sure the rest of her life was as smooth sailing as it could be. Yet... what did I do instead? I had to croak at the very last hurdle. In the most unsightly and pathetic way possible.

"Mommy just wants you to live..."

I... left her alone...

"Come on..."

With those conniving jackals...

"You're my everything, Rayne."

Again.

Thump. Thump.

Why...

"An indecisive fool will never achieve anything."

Why did I have to hesitate...

"You, as the runt of the litter, should be clearest about this."

If I had stabbed him sooner. Killed when I should have.

"Don't worry. Your mom's currently enjoying the best time of her life. HAHAHA!"

Abandoned morals when they're a liability...

"A murderer will always be a murderer."

Would it have turned out like this? Maybe then, Mom would still be alive.

"The way I see it, I don't think you're any different from your father."

Ahri wouldn't have lost everything... I wouldn't have ended up with nothing.

"You asked me if you could ever become a better hero?"

I regret it. I regret not doing anything...

Unwillingness brewed inside, almost to the point of overflowing. Yes... I'm unwilling! Why must it be us? WHY MUST IT ALWAYS BE US?!

Because we're not heroes? Because we're monsters? So we don't deserve any kindness befitting a human?! Is that it? Is that why I have to be the one with the dysfunctional family?! With everything ripped out of my hands???

"... Get up..."

My heart burned. In the depths of my consciousness, I vaguely felt a small ember simmering in my chest. Growing. Slow and steadily. It bathed the lightless abyss in a rich violet hue. The surrounding shadows bubbled. Agitated. Darkness crawled up my skin, gradually devouring what's left of my sanity. The void was closing in on me-sharp, endless, and hungry.

"... Wake up."

The space above me began to warp. Moments before a pair of unfeeling eyes opened. Full of alienation. Staring down at me like a god to a mortal.
