Rayne's POV

Above, Kaisel shrieked-his wings slicing through the smoke-choked sky.
The rest leapt down his back, landing around me in a loose formation. Blades drawn. Magic primed.
A beat later, Kaisel wheeled upwards-and unleashed a torrent of flame straight at Antares.
The firestorm struck him dead-on.
A tidal wave of molten gold swallowed the throne, engulfing Antares in searing brilliance. The floor cracked as blustery winds ripped through the war zone, flattening what remained of the obsidian pillars.
Then-
Boom.
The delayed explosion rocked the keep. Stone shattered. Dust swirled like a hurricane.
Silence.
Just smoke.
Thick. Suffocating.
I squinted into the haze.
Then it parted.
And my heart sank.
Antares stood exactly where we'd left him.
Unscathed. Unmoved.
No burns. No scratches.
Not even a fleck of ash on his armour.
The flames hadn't touched him.
They didn't matter.
"This isn't a tactic the Shadow Monarch was known for," he mused-voice cool, almost disappointed.
"Such underhanded methods..."
[Bloodlust is detected.]
"... are the way of humans."
His gaze sharpened-cold, absolute.
[Monarch of Destruction is using 'skill: breath of destruction'.]
"You have no right to be a monarch."
He opened his mouth-slow, deliberate.
Rows of jagged fangs glinted like ivory serrations.
I felt it.
Magic-not just gathering.
Consuming.
Air warped, sucked towards him like the world itself was being devoured. Heat bloomed in his throat, white-hot and rising. Flames churned behind his teeth.
[Bloodlust is detected.]
[Bloodlust is detected.]
[Bloodlust is detected.]
Then-he fired.
A beam of cosmic light tore through the chamber-wide as a canyon, blinding as the sun.
It wasn't a breath.
It was an execution.
Stone vapourised. The sky boiled. Reality blurred.
And in that instant-I knew.
If my shadows took that hit...
It would be over.
