The TV in the living room was blaring, and the three of them—Amy, Y/N, and Hartley—were sprawled across the couch, laughing at the latest ridiculous news clip.
"This show never disappoints!" Y/N shouted over the TV, clutching a pillow. "Oh, whoo! It's the funniest thing on TV!"
Amy cackled beside her. "Were you laughing at other people's misfortune on the news again?"
"Not me!" Y/N protested, though she was still snickering. "Okay... maybe a little. Some lady got trapped in an elevator for five days, and it was not pretty."
Hartley shook her head, leaning against the doorway with her arms crossed, amusement flickering in her eyes. "If they didn't want you laughing, they wouldn't put it on TV."
Amy rolled her eyes but grinned. "You know, every time I think I'm making progress with you people, something like this happens."
Hartley's expression softened slightly as she crossed the room to sit on the arm of the couch. "Anyways, news flash: The Round-Up is holding their annual Battle of the Bands on Saturday."
Y/N's eyes went wide. "Wait, so we get to sing and battle people?"
Amy bounced in her seat. "I'm in!"
Hartley raised a hand. "Okay, not a real battle. It's a contest where bands perform original songs and face-off against each other. But if we win, it'll boost our cred and make us insanely popular."
Y/N leaned back, smirking. "We are popular, you know. The other day, we were singing at the food court, and someone tipped us with curly fries."
"That wasn't a tip," Amy muttered. "They threw them at us and said, 'Stop singing! I'm trying to eat!'"
"Best two-ninety-nine I ever spent," Y/N quipped, shaking her head with a laugh.
Hartley held up her hands. "The only catch? To perform at the contest, we need to write an original song. Which we've never done before."
Amy leaned back, pouting. "Big deal. I used to write songs with my villain band all the time."
Y/N snorted. "Well, until they met their demise in a fiery inferno."
Amy rolled her eyes. "Which is ironic because we were gonna name the band Fiery Inferno."
At that moment, the door creaked open, and Celia stepped inside, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "Oh, hey, everyone! Mind if I join this chaos?"
"Come on in!" Hartley called cheerfully. "I know I'm supposed to knock, but I'm too excited. Plus, I really don't care."
Celia laughed, stepping fully into the room. "Robert just told me he booked us a romantic weekend at Lady Bird Lake!"
Y/N and Amy exchanged glances. "That sounds... far away," Y/N said, raising an eyebrow.
Celia waved her hand dismissively. "I like it. We're gonna watch the sunrise, play shuffleboard, and cruise the lake on a kayak built for two."
Amy smirked. "You know why they build 'em for two, don't ya?"
Celia raised an eyebrow. "If I say yes, will it stop you from telling me?"
Hartley giggled and shook her head. "Anyway, since I'm gonna be gone for a few days, here's the list of things I need you to do while I'm away."
Y/N groaned. "Wait... so you're going on vacation but want us to do your chores?"
Celia shrugged. "I was wrong about you. You are smart. It really doesn't seem fair to make us work while you're off having fun. But work does build character."
