the fragile shift

The mansion felt strangely empty the moment Soobin carried the last suitcase out the door. Rosé and Lisa hugged me tightly before leaving, their cheerful voices echoing down the hall until the door finally clicked shut behind them.

Silence.

For the past four days, the house had been filled with laughter, conversations, and warmth. Now, it was just Jungkook and me again… like it had been before.

I stood in the living room, staring at the quiet space, already missing the comfort his cousins gave me. Jungkook’s voice broke the silence.

“They’ll visit again soon.”

I turned, surprised. He was standing by the stairs, hands in his pockets, watching me with those unreadable eyes. For some reason, the fact that he noticed my expression made my heart skip.

“Yeah…” I mumbled, forcing a small smile. “It was nice having them here.”

His gaze lingered on me for a moment too long, before he looked away and started up the stairs. I followed slowly, but halfway up, I froze when I heard him speak again—quiet, almost hesitant.

“You laughed a lot these days.”

The same words he had said in the car. This time, his tone wasn’t sharp or jealous—it was softer, almost thoughtful.

I swallowed hard. “Well… they made it easy.”

He stopped at the top of the stairs, glancing back at me. For once, his eyes weren’t cold. They looked… conflicted. “You don’t laugh like that with me.”

My chest tightened. “Because… you don’t give me a reason to.”

The words slipped out before I could stop them. My breath caught in panic, waiting for his reaction. But instead of anger, Jungkook just stared at me, expression unreadable. Then, to my shock, the faintest ghost of a smile tugged at his lips.

It wasn’t mocking. It wasn’t cold.

It was real.

And in that fleeting moment, standing on opposite ends of the stairs, I felt something shift between us.

Something fragile. Something dangerous.

Something I didn’t want to end.
