S1 E6
Angie stood with the other interns and Bailey in the pit, watching Izzie present the case of Jimmy Harper, a man recovering from a coronary bypass with fairly stable vitals and blood pressure. She and Meredith were paying close attention, but George seemed more occupied with staring at the side of Meredith's face and failing miserably at being discreet.
"Hansley," Bailey called out suddenly, turning away from Izzie. Angie blinked, straightening up at the sound of her fake name and meeting Bailey's gaze. "How would you proceed to monitor Mr. Harper?"
Angie hesitated, and Izzie frowned, stepping forward with the chart in hand. "I would–"
"Is your name 'Hansley', Stevens?" Bailey asked dryly, shooting the blonde woman a withering glare. Izzie fell silent, her frown deepening as Bailey turned back to Angie hands on her hips expectantly.
Angie mentally ran through everything Izzie had just rattled off about Mr. Harper's condition, her brain working at light speed. "Get a chest x-ray and check his chest tube for possible occlusion," she responded dutifully, and Bailey nodded in approval.
"Good." Unceremoniously, she took the charts from Izzie and handed them off to Angie. "Do that. Just cause you've been gone a week, doesn't mean you get to start slacking." Bailey murmured words of reassurance to Mr. Harper's wife before walking off with her remaining three interns.
Angie gave Mr. Harper's wife a warm smile, ignoring the way Izzie huffed under her breath as she walked away.
Angie exchanged a few words and questions with Mr. Harper's wife before heading to the nurse's station to order the necessary tests. At the sight of her, nearly every nurse at the station gasped and gushed in excitement, rushing over to swallow her in a hug.
"Oh my god, Angie!"
"How are you? How was your week off?"
"Are you doing OK? I know you and Liz were super close."
"If you need to take a breather, just let us know and we can take over–"
"Guys, guys," Angie laughed, trying to hug back as many nurses as she could. "Calm down. I'm back and I'm OK, I promise."
Carmelita, one of the older nurses that had helped Angie learn how to change the dressings of a wound, stepped forward, taking Angie's face in her hands and examining her closely. It was a running gag among the nursing staff that, after five kids, Carmelita had a third eye that could see when anyone wasn't OK. Angie stifled a laugh as the Filipina woman stared her down, trying to sense any wayward emotions.
Finally, Carmelita hummed in satisfaction, nodding and stepping back, releasing Angie's face. "She's sad, but she's doing good," she announced to the rest of the nurses, and Angie couldn't help but furrow her brow in confused amusement.
"Thank you?" she murmured carefully, and the other nurses laughed softly. "But seriously, I promise everything's OK. I just gotta monitor this cardio case and ease back into the swing of things. And maybe watch that crazy tumor surgery if it happens."
The nurses gasped again, murmuring in agreement, enclosing Angie in their huddle at the counter.
"Oh my god, I know!"
"How did she let it get that bad?"
"I'm pretty sure she's scared of hospitals."
"'Scared' my ass. My momma woulda beat me three ways to Sunday if I tried to pull that crap."
There was a series of agreeing hums, and someone murmured something in Spanish that Angie had heard enough times to know it was along the lines of 'this is why white people need to spank their kids.'
