Chapter 48
Nadia
"You both have to leave if you want me to look her over" Doctor Anthony fusses a bit.
"Fine" Jacob and James say at the same time and walk out to sit in the waiting room. I wait for the door to close and inhale deeply through my nose. He's a wolf, I just know it.
"Luna, it's a pleasure to meet you" Doctor Anthony bares his neck to me in submission. I'm not trying to make him do it, but he seems inclined. "Your aura is very strong" he says, wincing a bit.
"I'm sorry, I can't control it" I say in a soft voice.
"Do you want to tell me what happened?" he asked, taking out his note pad.
"I uh..." I hesitate.
"Go on, humans can't hear what's happening in here" he assures me.
"I changed into a werewolf, and then a wolf and I screamed a little" I admit sheepishly. "It was my first time and it hurt a lot."
"How long ago did the Alpha start the process?" he asks, looking at my mate mark, which still looked fresh.
"Three days ago, two nights I think" I try to remember, but it's so hard with the scent of lavender and antiseptic in the room. I sniff loudly, however unintentionally, and lean forward. "You smell like lavender" I tell him. "And hand sanitizer" I wrinkle my nose a bit.
"You're a bit early to change," he hummed to himself.
"Eve has been explaining things to me this morning," I tell him.
"Is that your wolf?" he asks curiously.
"Evangeline, yes. She says I can call her Eve. She started talking to me when I woke up. There were whispers since last night, but I thought that was normal" I explained myself a bit more.
"I've heard that name somewhere before" he hums to himself. "The human, you didn't tell him did you?" he asks.
"No, of course not. He'd never understand" I shake my head. "He's one of my best friends. I have to give him a good reason. I've been off work for a few days because I was in heat, and James was in a Rutt.
"May I look you over?" Doctor Anthony asks, looking a bit more than curious.
"Of course" I say, even though I'm a bit hesitant. I've never met this man, but Eve hasn't said anything so I assume he's trustworthy. He takes his stethoscope and checks my heart beat, before proceeding to check for a fever and he hums at the numbers. "You still have a fever" he comments. He does a few cursory checks elsewhere and he stands back. "I recommend a few days away from humans if you can. Your wolf is very powerful, and she might change again at any given time. You also need rest, if you can stand it. I'll bind your ankle and say you sprained your foot. Do you have somewhere you can go?" he asks.
"Not without humans" I cringe, realizing I'm no longer one of them.
"I'll talk to the Alpha, don't worry Luna. We will take care of you" he says and he takes a binding tape and does my foot and ankle. He makes sure it won't move for at least a little while. "Keep the binding on for when you are around humans for about a week" he warns me and I nod my understanding.
"I'll get Jacob out of here so you can talk to sweet James" I smile brightly at the good doctor. "I'm glad to have met you" I tell him and he seems to flush a bit. I fake my best limp which isn't hard since the bandage is fairly cumbersome, and walk out the door.
"Are you okay?" Jacob demands while James is looking at the doctor expectantly.
"I'll pay, can you help her to the car?" James asks Jacob after giving me a kiss on my forehead. I want to preen, and I look at his shirt deciding that it's also going under my pillows tonight.
"I'm okay Jacob, just a sprained ankle. I think my pride is hurt more than anything" I frown. "I was getting into the shower to cool down my fever and twisted it," I explain in a wicked lie that I already feel awful for.
"That makes more sense" Jacob helps me out to the car and puts me in the back and gets back in the front. "You swear to me he didn't hurt you?" he asked, seeming to cool down a bit.
"I swear, he's never hurt a hair or eyelash on my head" I promise. That wasn't a lie, James has done everything except hurt me in any way, shape, or form. He's loved me so thoroughly it's been almost mind boggling.
"The doctor suggested getting away for a few days so I would stop worrying about the store and rest for a bit. Would you be okay with that?" I ask him timidly.
"Of course you should. I know you can't really leave work at work, since you live there. I'll take care of Melody, you just worry about you, okay?" Jacob asked.
"Thank you" I give a soft smile and settle back in my seat.
James
"What's happened to my mate?" I demanded as soon as Jacob and Nadia were outside.
"I need to do some research. She shouldn't have shifted after two and a half days. It's not even the full moon yet that might have acted against it. I need to get into the pack library" Doctor Anthony says, bearing his neck in submission. "You need to get her away from humans for a few days, or at least somewhere secluded where you won't be bothered" he says, licking his dry lips. He's obviously nervous about the newest development.
"As soon as the heat is over, she's going to want to go back to work, and she's still getting used to heightened senses" I muse softly.
"Yes, she commented on my scent," he said with flushed cheeks. "Lavender and sanitizer," he adds.
"She's done that with everyone she's seen today" I nod, trying to hide a smirk. She's going to be a strong Luna. "The pack library is still packed away" I tell him, suddenly feeling worried.
"We need the old texts," he says.
"I'll talk to Steve" I sigh heavily. He's not going to like what's coming next. "I'll be in touch" I tell him.
"Please, for at least a week, keep her to yourself" the doctor says to me as I'm walking away.
"I shall" I say and think he really has no idea.
I get outside and Nadia is in the back of the car and Jacob is waiting patiently. I walk over and get in the front passenger side.
"How are you feeling?" I ask her worriedly.
"I feel fantastic right now, except for the ankle of course" Nadia says, then quickly adds about her ankle.
"We are going to get Steve to move down a floor from the penthouse at the hotel and we will stay there a few days. Less accidents and we can order in food" I tell her and I know she's already about to argue with me. "I'll bring the fruit and put it in the mini fridge, and Steve can watch Melody if you need him to." I want to make sure she knows this isn't up for discussion.
"She already asked me, I'll be taking Melody home with me to watch. The kids love her anyways" Jacob says. "Listen, I'm sorry. I thought you hurt her, and she explained it to me. Were you in bed when she screamed?" he asks.
"I was dead asleep to be honest. I was as surprised as you were" I admit honestly.
"Well, I'll iron out the scheduling with Jenny. Kate and Jeremy will be asked if they want to go full time, this week has been busier than ever" Jacob says.
"I'm sure they'd like that. But one of them needs to be off at five for the kids" I tell him.
"We can work with that," he replies.
"While I pack, can you go grab us some new books to read?" Nadia asks innocently.
"I'll grab them, I know you want two of each. I'll get you fourteen, so you have a full seven days full each" Jacob grins.
"Thank you" I told him, honestly grateful.
Jacob drove us back to the bookstore and parked in the alleyway beside an orange honda civic. I got out and carried Nadia upstairs while Jacob went to update everyone that was working. I had taken the time on the drive to tell Steve he needs to move down a floor and book the entire two upper floors for the next week at least. He didn't question it thankfully. Just told me that it was done, and he could see it coming. Nadia walked through the apartment grabbing everything she could possibly need for a week, but it looked like she had packed for two weeks. I packed away the fruit and veggie trays to bring with us. She only sat down in the living room once, and that's when Jacob came up with some new books for us, and two flowers. He wouldn't take money for it, saying it was coming out of my salary to which I chuckled.
Steve drove over to pick us up, so I carried down the luggage with Jacob's help. I then went back upstairs and carried my little mate down the stairs like the princess she is, to keep up appearances. We were just getting down to the towncar when I finally heard it and it almost knocked me to my feet in surprise.
"I love you, Alpha James" I heard Nadia's voice in my head. "I'm so glad you're my mate" she continued and I felt tears prickle at my eyes. Fang wanted to take over all of the sudden and it's a bad time. She mind linked me. My once human mate figured out how to speak to me through her mind, without me showing her. Another thing she's picking up on fast.
"And I love you little mate, my Luna, my everything" I tell her, meaning every single word. Steve must see something on my face because he gives me a questioning gaze and I just smile broadly. I can't help myself. I've been waiting for this moment my entire life, and it just keeps getting better and better.
"All set?" Steve asks politely as I set Nadia in the back seat.
"We're all set I think" I nod.
"Don't worry about Melody, we will take good care of her. Don't worry about the bookstore, we've got this. Just get better" Jacob says warmly before I get in beside Nadia who instantly curls into my side.
