Zilla's POV
With a sense of urgency, I carefully carried Kai's limp body toward the infirmary, my heart racing as I felt the weight of his unconscious form against me. As I moved, I continually checked his pulse, my fingers pressing against his skin to ensure that he was still alive and breathing. Despite my anxiety, I could feel the steady rhythm of his heartbeat—a small comfort amid chaos. However, I needed to assess the situation further.
I pushed open the door to the infirmary and gently laid Kai down on the bed, making sure not to jostle him too much. The stark, sterile smell of antiseptic filled the air, mingling with the faint sound of machinery beeping in the background. Just then, I heard the door click shut behind me, and I turned to see Finn entering, his demeanor a mix of concern and determination. He locked the door with a swift motion, ensuring our privacy.
"Did you manage to get Brodey to calm down?" I asked, my voice steady despite the worry gnawing at my insides. I began to carefully undo Kai's bandage, my fingers moving deftly as I inspected the wound. I needed to rule out infection—always a possibility, though one I hoped was unlikely.
"Yeah, he's fine now," Finn replied, his brows slightly furrowed. "I put him on the couch to sleep and calm down. He put up quite the fight, but I'm bigger than him, so I was able to settle him down." Finn's tension seemed to ease as he spoke. I could picture the struggle, Brodey's frustration bubbling over before Finn finally managed to soothe him.
As I focused on Kai's injury, I tried to push the unease about Brodey out of my mind. I needed to make sure Kai was stable; he needed my full attention now, more than ever.
As I carefully peeled back the old bandage, the faint smell of antiseptic hung in the air. Just as I was changing the dressing, I noticed Kai starting to stir awake.
"Kai, can you hear me?" I asked gently, propping him up on the pillows to ensure he was more comfortable. His eyes were bloodshot, and he seemed to struggle to lift his head, which hung heavily against his chest.
With a faint attempt to reassure me, he muttered, "I'm fine," but the words were barely audible, and his shaky voice betrayed his condition. Realizing he needed more support, I eased him back down onto the bed, adjusting the covers around him.
From the corner of the room, Finn's voice broke through the tension. "What happened to Kai?" he asked, concern etched across his face as he leaned forward, eyebrows knitted together in worry. I shifted my gaze between Finn and Kai, sensing the weight of the situation pressing down on us all.
"Kai, I need to know what happened to you if you want me to help you," I said softly, placing my hands on his shoulders and gently massaging them in an attempt to alleviate some of the tension that was weighing him down. I hoped that my touch would bring him some comfort and that he would feel safe enough to open up to me about his ordeal.
I continued to knead my fingers into Kai's shoulders, feeling the tension in his muscles as I tried to provide him some comfort. Just then, I felt a slight shift behind me; Finn was moving closer, attempting to navigate around me to reach Kai from the other side of the infirmary bed. In his effort to get around, his hand accidentally brushed against my back and waist, sending a jolt of surprise through me.
