A few hours had passed since Mike had so rudely interrupted Steve and Kim. As planned, everyone was a the Squawk for the the crawl that night. Well... almost everyone.
"Henderson residence! This is Claudia."
"Hey, Mom," Kim said into the Squawk's landline.
"Aw, Kimberly," her tone was much more jovial that it would have been a year ago. The space of not living under the same roof really had done wonders for their relationship. "It's so good to hear your voice, sweetie. To what do I owe this pleasant surprise."
"Um," she chewed on the inside of her cheek, trying to come up with what to say. The last thing they needed was for Claudia Henderson to start panicking over her son's whereabouts. "I was actually hoping Dust would pick up. Is he, uh, is he home?"
"No, I don't think so." Her mom covered the phone receiver, but Kim could still hear her call Dustin's name just to double check. "Yeah, he's not home right now. Do you need something?"
"No, no," Kim shook her head even though her mom couldn't see her. "He just, uh," she pressed her lips together trying to come up with a believable lie. "He was just supposed to meet Steve and I at the Squawk after school and then the three of us were going to go out to dinner."
"And he's not there yet? School got out almost three hours ago," the pitch of Claudia's voice rose as she began to panic.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm sure it's nothing to worry about, Mom," Kim said in to the phone, her heart starting to pound with concern. "He's probably just blowing us off again. He's done that a lot lately, I really shouldn't be surprised."
"I know," her mom sighed. "We just need to--"
"Give him space, I know. Can you just have him call the Squawk when he gets home?" Kim interrupted, knowing all of her friends would be anxiously waiting outside to hear if she'd been able to find Dustin. "Thanks. Bye, Mom! Love you!"
Kim slammed the phone back into place on the wall before letting the back of her head hit the wall. Fuck.
She closed her eyes, taking a few deep breaths. She knew something had happened to Dustin, she could feel it. He'd been a flaky little ass hole lately but he wouldn't ditch them when it was something as important as a crawl. Not unless something was seriously wrong.
"Fuck," she breathed out loud this time, jogging out of the building and towards the rest of her friends in the field outside.
"Dustin, you're a hour late, man. You're making us nervous," Lucas -- who has also been on find Dustin duty -- said into his walkie talkie. "We need you here at the Squawk. Dustin, if you can hear us, please respond. Over."
"Just got off the phone with my mom. She hasn't heard from him," Kim shook her head.
