The second Kim got out of her car at Hawkins General, her number one priority was finding her best friend. She spotted Nancy's curly permed hair through the sliding glass doors and quickly ran inside, Lucas and Mike right behind her.
Nancy was chasing after her parents, both of them on gurneys with doctors already trying to save them as they were wheeled down the hallway.
Not saying a word, Kim caught up to her best friend, intertwining their shaking fingers and giving her hand a tight squeeze. Kim had never seen Nancy so rattled in all their years of friendship.
The gurneys passed through two double doors that were promptly shut in the quartet's faces.
"I'm afraid you'll all have to wait out here," a nurse informed them.
"But our parents—" Nancy started to argue.
"Now we have to let the doctors do their jobs."
Sensing that Nancy might pick up some of her own habits and throw a punch at the nurse, Kim redirected the group away from the door. "Let's go get cleaned up, okay, Nance?" Nancy nodded wordlessly, still death gripping Kim's hand. "We'll meet you boys over in the waiting room, okay?"
As soon as the girls were in the bathroom, Nancy finally allowed herself to fully breakdown. Kim held her best friend's shaking body in her arms, the pair slowly sliding down the bathroom door and onto the floor.
"Kimmy, I can't loose them," Nancy sobbed. "I can't lose my mom. If we had just gotten there a little sooner—"
Kim shook her head, still cradling the other girl on the tiled floor. "Don't think like that. Just breathe with me, Nance."
The two girls took deep breaths in sync, trying to stop Nancy's hyperventilating. Kim smoothed her friend's hair, blinking back her own tears.
"Thank you," Nancy hiccupped once she'd calmed down enough to speak coherently. "For sitting here with me, for everything you did at the house, just for everything.
Kim smiled sadly. "Don't mention it. You would do the same thing for me if the roles were reversed."
Nancy nodded, still sniffling. "I can't lose them, Kimmy."
"I know," Kim nodded as well. "But the doctors are doing everything they can. I know it sucks but we just have to be patient, let them do their jobs."
"You're blazer!" Nancy realized. "You just bought that when we went shopping last weekend. You loved it and now it's ruined."
A small, sad laugh escaped Kim's lips. "Trust me, Nance, the blazer is the last thing I'm worried about right now. I'd ruin it a hundred times over if it helped save your mom and stop the bleeding." Kim new that Nancy was focusing on a smaller problem to not have to think about the much bigger problems of Holly's disappearance and her parent's being mauled by a Demogorgon. "Come on," Kim said, standing up and extending a hand down to help Nance up as well. "Let's get cleaned up, wash some of this blood off."
