Inside the Squawk basement, Kim and the rest of the crew gathered last minute supplies for the crawl, ensuring that everything was a go.
"Tag's active?" Hopper asked as Jonathan handed the blinker to him.
"Copy," Robin nodded from behind the large control panel desk. She leaned into the mic, "Harrington, you getting any signal? Tag is active."
"Yeah, just give me a second," they heard Steve's voice muffled back to them through the speakers. The Harrington boy was currently out in the Squawk van, making sure all the equipment was okay to track Hopper from the Right-side Up. After a moment, they all heard Steve's voice again, "Hey, anybody know how Henderson's wheelie thing works?"
"Uh, any ideas?" Robin asked the group gathered in front of her.
Kim pressed her lips together, holding back a remark about how this was exactly why they should have gone to look for Dustin.
"There's a safety lock," Will explained. "Look for a small switch under the wheel."
Robin nodded, leaning back into the mic to relay the message back to Steve.
"Safety lock, real necessary," Steve scoffed. Kim could practically hear him rolling his eyes through the speaker. Despite the anxiety currently gnawing at her, she smiled. She loved how well she knew her boyfriend. She loved how just hearing his voice through a walkie talkie could make her feel better.
"Okay, getting a signal. It's pretty quiet, though,"Steve reported after a few minutes. They could hear him messing with the equipment in the truck. "Okay, signal's holding a steady 90 dB. But how exactly am I supposed to monitor this and drive without Henderson?"
Hopper sucked in a breath and tried not to meet Kim's pointed glare. "Uh, hear anything from Inspector Gadget?"
"Nothing," Mike huffed.
"No, thanks to you," Kim muttered angrily.
"I can do it," Will volunteered hopefully. "I-I can monitor."
"No, you're staying here," Joyce shook her head.
"No, Mom, I helped Dustin set up the antenna," Will explained, trying to keep the whine out of his voice. "I know how to work it."
"Out of the question. It's just a wheel," Joyce continued to shake her head.
"It's not just a wheel," Will protested.
"Jonathan, y-you can work it, right?" Joyce asked.
Jonathan glanced at his younger brother. Will's eyes were practically pleading with him to say no so Will would have the opportunity to get out of the Squawk and actually do something. He glanced back at his mom, feeling torn. "Yeah, yeah," he sighed. "I mean, I think so."
"You better not think. You better know," Hopper said. "You lose me out there, I'm not coming home."
"I mean," Kim glanced at Will, sensing his desperation. "If Will knows for sure that he work the wheelie thingy, shouldn't he do it?" Will smiled at her gratefully as she continued. "No offense Jonathan but you didn't exactly seem all that confident."
