Chapter 24

Alex’s POV

“Have you seen Hailey?” I asked Casey. She shook her head at me and continued talking to Carson. I sighed. We were packing up the place when Hailey disappeared all of a sudden.

I felt a tap on my shoulder. “Hey, man. Have you seen Danielle?” Lance asked me.

I turned and looked at him confused. “No, but I can’t find Hailey either.”

“They might be off together somewhere. If they’re not back soon, we’ll go looking for them together, okay?” he tried acting stress-free but I could see the worried signs etched deep on her face. I also knew that the same look was on my own face and we were both thinking the same thing. What if they were both together, but in danger? What if we were all happy and packing right now while they were both fighting off something horrendous? I couldn’t help but feel my stomach squeezing horribly.

I shook off the feeling and went to help with packing but the thought haunted my mind as we emptied the party decorations into the cars. When the whole place was cleaned up and everybody was standing back to admire their work and make sure that nothing was forgotten there, I went over to Lance.

“They’re not back yet.” I needn’t say more. He nodded and turned to the others.

“Guys, Alex and I are going to look for Danielle and Hailey. They’ve disappeared a while ago and they’re not back yet.”

“I’ll go with you!” suggested Casey.

“No!” I protested. “What if they are in trouble and you…”

“That’s exactly why I’m going! What if they’re in trouble?! I can’t live with the guilt if something happened to Hailey!” Between coughs, Lance said “And Danielle,” so Casey continued, “and Danielle. I’m going with you and that’s final.”

I nodded my head hesitantly at that. Hailey was her best friend and she had the right to worry about her. Although I didn’t want her to get hurt either. But… I wasn’t sure that Hailey was in trouble anyways. She could merely be wandering around with Danielle and lost track of time.

We headed off and started walking in the only path there. It was narrow, steep, and I kept stumbling from the unevenness of the ground and the rocks scattered across it.  After a few minutes of walking with no success, I heard a voice from ahead.

“…Good job, my dear Danielle!” exclaimed a feminine voice. There was something familiar about it but I wasn’t quite sure what it was. Why was it thanking Danielle anyways? If Danielle was here, then Hailey was supposedly there with her, but why were they talking to this anonymous person? Who was it that they were talking to? I made a move to step forward but Casey stopped me with her arm and only made a hushing gesture with her finger when I gave her an inquiring look.

“Thank you, master,” said Danielle but in a voice that was rather odd. Master? What the hell? I stepped forwards and pushed past Casey as she tried, once again, to prevent me from doing so.

“Let’s leave. It isn’t safe here. They’re probably looking for you now.” I only managed to catch a glimpse of the scene in front of me before there was a blinding flash of light and it was all gone. They had apparated.

I turned back to face Lance and Casey with a defeated look on my face.

“What did you see there?” Lance whispered.

“No need for whispering. They’re gone.” I said.

“Gone? What do you mean ‘gone’? They can’t possibly be gone yet,” protested Casey but I cut her off.

“Yes, they apparated… and they took Hailey with them. We need to get her back.”

“Who are ‘they’?” asked Lance. I turned to him.

“Your mate is no good, Lance. Neither is…” I couldn’t complete it. It was just too horrible to admit that she was evil and a killer, and even yet, alive.

“Who?” asked Casey impatiently.

“I just can’t believe it,” I muttered. “I just can’t. How can it be? It makes no sense.”

“Alex, who?!”

 “Christine.”

That was followed by, “Christine?” and “You’re joking right?”

“I’m not joking. I know I only caught a glimpse of her but I can recognize that face anywhere. But how? I thought she was dead? She doesn’t have a twin that I don’t know about, does she?” Casey and Lance exchanged a look after I completed my sentence.

“She is not dead. That’s the cover story that Hailey’s family created to cover up for the fact that she ran away,” explained Lance.

“But how can she be a killer?! She is too soft for that!” I exclaimed.

“She was soft. Very sweet, even. But right before she left, she was acting weirdly. Pretty much like a psycho,” said Lance and Casey muttered beneath her breath, “I guess she still is.”

I looked at them in disbelief. How could she?

“What else do you know?”

“We’ll explain later. We should find Hailey first! She’s being kidnapped by her psycho of a mother and Danielle now. Who knows what they want with her?” exclaimed Casey anxiously.

“But what about Danielle? How could she?” Lance cried out.

“I don’t know, Lance. But we’ll find out,” assured him Casey.

I could almost feel what he was undergoing. Lance was a sensitive guy; one of the few that respected girls and looked for the right one before dating them. He never played girls and I was sure of that. When he found Danielle, as Hailey told me, he was so ecstatic. She seemed to fill a hole in his heart that made him so cheerful that you could practically sense the exuberance oozing out of him. Now that we found out that she might have been backstabbing us the whole time… well, the devastated look on his face showed it all.

“Lance…” I murmured softly and put my hand on his shoulder reassuringly. “We’ll find them. You don’t know… she might not be doing this willingly in the first place!”

He nodded stiffly.

“Now… Let the search begin.” He said determinedly.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So.... It's been over a month that I haven't been updating! :O I'm am soooooooo sorry. It's just that... I have two reasons. First, I haven't been finding any time. School, tests, social life, and stuff other than wrting :(  Second, I have reached a dead end in this story. I have no idea what to write next. I know what I want to happen in the story but I just don't know how to develop it and put them in a creative way. So I think the updates will be less frequent than  first started out until my summer vacation starts (which is probably almost 1 month from now). Okay, thanks! :)
