Chapter 16

The next day, I woke up on the floor near my bed. I sighed and got up to sit back on my bed, taking my phone from the bedside table and checking the time to find that it was already 10:02 AM. I had to start getting ready to go to my doctor.

I felt horrible knowing that there is a possibility that my baby might not have made it through the fight. That wolf did hit my stomach, after all. I got in the shower and washed my body, noticing the many cuts and bruises ruining my usually unblemished skin. One of the biggest bruises was on my waist; it was deep purple tinted slightly to blue and was the size of my fist. I winced as my hand brushed against it. That slight movement hurt too much so I decided to move on from that area and just wash it when it gets better.

When I finished, I turned the water off and hopped out of the shower, wrapping a towel around me making sure not to apply any pressure on the sensitive bruise on my waist. I chose to wear a grey hoodie that made my remarkable curves unnoticeable with black pants. I didn’t need any guys staring or trying to make any move because I was in the mood to scoop someone’s eyeballs out.

I didn’t bother eating breakfast; I just exited the house and went to my car. I noticed that the house was unusually quiet and my dad wasn’t there which kind of worried me, but I just shrugged it off. I entered my car and started driving as the nervousness set deep inside me, eating through me. What if my baby was actually dead? There was a huge chance that it didn’t survive the fight, but I didn’t let my mind drift there. The thought sent shivers down my spine and I felt the butterflies in my stomach multiplying by the second.

I wasn’t exactly heading towards a doctor’s office; it was more like a house of a friend that used to be a doctor a few years ago. The house was small and found in a secluded area in the woods, built decades ago. Inside it lived an old family friend, who was also Sarah and I’s babysitter in our younger years and I loved her to bits and treated her as if she was my mother. I knew that if I told her about my pregnancy she wouldn’t judge me as other people would for being a teenage mother.

I knocked on the door and waited for Ms. Steel, or who I call Anastasia, to open it with her usual bright smile.  I fidgeted in my place as the door in front of me opened with a creek. I looked up at her face as it transformed from completely shocked to grinning, and I plastered a weak smile on my face.

“Hi Anastasia,” I said weakly, but she seemed way too glad about seeing me to go for the normal greeting.

“Oh my God! Hailey?! How have you been? Why aren’t you visiting me more often?” She started as she stepped out of her house looking wearily behind her and closed the door grinning like an idiot at me. She acted like a kid sometimes; she was in her late thirties, younger than my dad in just a few years. I looked at the now closed door confused at why she didn’t pull me inside. She noticed me staring and a worried look settled on her face.

“Uh, sorry, I have someone in there,” she apologized sheepishly.

“Oh, I needed a doctor and thought of coming to you. You know, since it is your speciality,” I mumbled, unable to keep the disappointment from my voice. She looked at me, searching my face for a few seconds, and then said “come in”.

Anastasia’s POV

“Oh, I needed a doctor and thought of coming to you. You know, since it is your speciality,” mumbled Hailey, disappointment seeping in her voice. I searched her face and she seemed really desperate for my help. I thought about it; Robert was probably still asleep in my bedroom. There was a great chance that Hailey wouldn’t see her dad in here, but I just couldn’t shake the worry off. After a mini battle in my mind, I decided on letting her in.

“Come in,” I said, turning and opening the door and ushering her in. I looked around quickly making sure that Rob was nowhere to be seen. He had promised to tell Sarah and Hailey about our plans of getting married in the summer soon, but until then, it was a secret between us. Fortunately, he was still upstairs. I sighed thinking of him. I really wished that Sarah and Hailey accepted us; their agreement was really important, for we were not to be married without their consent.

Leading her to the room where I keep all of my doctors’ equipment, I started wondering why she seemed depressed and needed my help so badly.

“Hailey, what is going on?” I asked her and she started fidgeting in her place uncomfortably and cleared her throat, looking up at me from the seat that she had taken.

“I’m- I’m pregnant,” she said making my eyes widen in shock.

“You are?” I practically screamed. Robert didn’t tell me about this!

“Um, I’m not sure if I still am. That’s why I came here,” she explained and I nodded in understanding. While I did tests on her, she explained the whole story about how she got pregnant, broke up with him, and a wolf attacked them. If you haven’t guessed yet, I am a werewolf too. After telling me the story, I still felt like she was keeping an important part from me, but I didn’t ask her about it, for she would have told me if she wanted to.

We were just sitting there silently waiting for the results to come up, when the door opened and Robert entered the room groggily rubbing his eyes.

“Hey baby, I’ve been looking for you. Wh-” he started but was silenced as soon as he opened his eyes and noticed that Hailey was with me, looking at him with wide eyes and an opened mouth.

“I can explain!” He shouted defensively.

“Then explain,” replied Hailey. She wasn’t saying it in a challenging way, but in a way that looked like she didn’t care if her dad and I were together.

“Anastasia and I are getting married in the summer.”

“How long has this decision been taken?”

“For two months.”

“Cool,” she said and looked back at me smiling. Rob’s brows furrowed in confusion.

“You aren’t mad? You agree?” He asked, searching her face for any sign of anger. She just shrugged in response.

“Ana has always been a mother to me, so I don’t really get why I would be mad at her for being my step-mom,” she said, and then gasped, “she should move in with us! I’m sure Sarah wouldn’t mind.” I smiled and looked at Rob and he nodded his head at me.

“So what are you doing here, Hailey? I thought you were going to a doctor’s appointment?”

“Ana is my doctor. I’d rather have her than some random person that would judge me for being pregnant at sixteen,” she explained. I smiled that she trusted me even before she found out that I was going to marry her dad. Just then, I remembered the test results and exited the room to get them.

Hailey’s POV

Ana went out of the room while my dad and I were chatting excitedly about the wedding to probably get my test results. I got even more nervous than I already was and my palms felt clammy.

When she entered the room again, my breath caught in my throat.

“Hailey....”
