Chapter 7

“Hailey, I need to talk to you!” Sarah barged into my room with a huge grin plastered to her face.

 “What about?” I asked, genuinely confused.  

 “I found my mate!” She squealed, and I ran up to her and hugged her.

 “That’s great! Who is it?” She's lucky. I want a mate!

“Chris. Apparently, he found out on the day of your performance, but was afraid to tell me, scared of my reaction. As soon as I told dad today, he invited them over. They’re coming over in an hour. Get ready!” She chirped. She turned, ready to leave, but I grabbed her arm and pulled her back, asking her that one question that has been on my mind for a really long time.

“How do you recognize your mate? You know, in case I find mine…”

 “A guy can recognize his mate just from looking at her when he become eighteen years old or more. A girl needs to touch her mate in order to recognize him. She should feel sparks.” She explained and left me in my room to get ready.

I dressed up in super skinny jeans and a cute tank top. No need to dress all classy. I’ve known these dudes my entire life!

 I let my brown hair down, to reveal its natural curls, and went down the stairs just in time for the doorbell to ring.  I opened the door and welcomed everyone inside. By everyone, I mean Chris, Alex, Carson, and their father. Their mom died after she gave birth to Carson, so he doesn’t really know her.

Dinner was fun… for most of us at least. While everyone were chatting and munching their food happily, Alex was staring at me intensely. Do I have something on my face? I sun-consciously touched my face to make sure there was nothing abnormal on it.

Suddenly, Alpha Ray (There father) asked: “So, Robert, any information on the murders?” My father looked at me uncomfortably before answering. He knew I disliked talking about the murders. After all, they are the reason of Damon's death.          

“Well, no. The murderer is doing a great job at hiding any evidence. The only thing we found are some paw prints, the size of a werewolf’s. So, all we know is that the murderer is a werewolf, and not human. Other than that, the blood of the victims had been drained from their bodies. We don’t know why though. What could the murderer be up to? Draining blood like that? ”

Alpha Ray shrugged. You see, once the murders started, he has ordered my dad to be the detective in this case, since he is the best evidence-tracker in the pack. He is also the Beta.

 Dinner was over soon after that discussion.  I started taking the plates from the table to the sink.  Alex decided to be a gentleman and helped me. When he handed me his plate, our hands brushed. My eyes widened and my jaw dropped as soon as I felt sparks.

Alex’s POV

Oh sh!t. She noticed. What do I do?

 “Mate.” She whispered.

 “I reject you, Hailey.” I said flatly, trying hard to keep my face blank and emotionless. I turned and left, ignoring the shouts of my wolf ordering me to go back to her and kiss her. She’s changed, and I don’t like what she’s turned into. She has a lot of explaining to do before I accept her as my mate.

When I reached the door, I turned to her.

 “And don’t you dare mention that to anyone.”  I ordered, using my alpha voice. Now, she has no choice but to obey my order.

Hailey’s POV

That’s it! I sprinted to my room and jumped on my bed, landing face-first on my soft pillows. I cried and sobbed, my heart clenching, until I came up to a decision. I called him.

 “Hunter, we need to talk.”

“What?” Hunter looked broken.

 “I said: We need to break up! Hunter, you have to understand. I found my mate, and he rejected me. I can’t be with you, knowing that you also have a mate there somewhere. I would be lying to myself and to you if we stay like this.”

“But I love you!”

 This is wrong. “I’m sorry, Hunter. I hope you find your mate soon and have your happy ending.” I hugged him and kissed him goodbye.
