Chapter 25
I drowsily opened my eyes. I was sitting on the floor in an awkward position with my hands on my lap. My back was aching terribly. I craned my neck and tried to take in my surroundings but it- wherever I was- was dark and I couldn’t make out a thing. There was something covering my mouth, gagging me. I tried to take it off but that made me aware of my hands being tied up. I can’t recall how long I sat there silently panicking, but I remember hearing the sound of a door slamming open and a soft familiar voice laughing quietly.
Then there was a click of a switch and a blinding light made me squeeze my eyes shut, but I didn’t open them once again from the fright of who the person who entered the room might be. It’s true, I’ve been working hard with Alex for this matter, but now that I was in this situation, I just wished to be home, embraced by safety and warmth, and away from all harm. I didn’t expect it to be that frightening.
“Open your eyes, dear,” a voice said tauntingly but I didn’t listen to it. Instead, I squeezed my eyes even harder and they started to hurt, but I kept them shut. The voice continued, “Don’t you want to see your mother after these two long years?” Mother?! My eyes popped open.
There she stood, with her wide brown eyes, staring at me. But she wasn’t my mom, the one that I knew and loved. She was different, even by looks. Her usually long brown her was chopped to her shoulders, all tangled and messy. The length wasn’t even, which made me doubt that she cut it herself. Her eyes that used to be full of warmth and love were dull and… what was that other emotion? Evil? Even her face was pale and white, ruining her old aura of pure and natural beauty. I always thought that I looked like her, but she now looked like a ghost of her old self, a monster that was hard to recognize. I wouldn’t have been able to distinguish her if she hadn’t told me who she was. I wouldn’t have believed her but there was a slight resemblance between the previous and new her.
“Haven’t you got anything to say to me after all this time?” she asked. “Or don’t you miss me, you heartless little bitch? Were you too busy with your stupid mate that you forgot about me?! Huh, answer me!”
I tried to look down at the gag on my mouth and thought, Well, I would if I didn’t have this damn gag on my mouth, you stupid woman!
Surprisingly, she came up to me and removed the gag.
It’s as if she read my mind, I thought.
“I did, honey. Did you forget that I am a witch?” she spoke. I looked up at her taken aback. Well, I actually did forget. I had so many questions for her about that matter. Could she hear what I was thinking all the time? Did that mean that I could be a witch too? Why didn’t she tell me before? Many questions swirled in my mind. It felt as if my head was about to explode from the pressure of all the queries inside it.
I took a deep breath and said one of them aloud.
“If you are a witch, then… what about me?”
“What about you?”
“Is being a witch hereditary? Like, if you are one, does it mean that I am too?” I tried to explain my thoughts that were jumbled up in my mind.
“Well, if both parents are, then the kid is supposed to be one too. But considering your father isn’t, I’m not sure. Witches should marry wizards, it’s a rule. Before me, nobody ever broke that rule, so you are the first ever kid to ever be in this situation. Don’t ask me, because all I can tell you is what I presume, no facts.”
“What do you presume?”
She looked at me.
“Stop asking questions. I don’t know the answer. You might be, you might not, you may have half the powers. I DON’T KNOW,” she yelled and made a move to leave. Quickly, as she was walking to the door, I said something that I hoped to get a reaction from her.
“Okay, then. I’ll ask you something that you surely know the answer of. Why did you kidnap your own daughter?” She stopped in her place, and sucked a breath in. I watched her every move as she slowly turned around to face me. The look in her eyes silenced me. The stillness was so evident that I could hear the echo of water droplets dripping somewhere in the room.
“So?” I broke the silence, also tearing the thick tension.
“You want to know why?” she asked softly. “I’ll tell you why. But hold on for the shocks of your life. Nothing around you is what you thought it was. Nothing!” Her voice was raising with each word she pronounced. I waited for her to continue, and she did, after a moment of silence.
“It all started more than ten years ago. I was at a party when I met your father. There was no love at first sight, no spark, no connection. We aren’t mates,” she stated and paused to let me take in the shock. They aren’t mates?! “But we were drunk, and we were young, and we made a huge mistake. After I got pregnant, I got to know him. I found out that his mate was dead. Then on one day of my pregnancy, he asked me to marry him. Not out of love, but out of the fact that we were going to raise a child together and that he didn’t have a mate. Considering, I haven’t found my mate either at that time, I accepted. After a few years, I met a guy, and I instantly new from the immediate connection that we were mates. That guy happens to be Bob.” That was the other shock.
“Alex’s dad?!” I exclaimed.
She nodded and carried on. “He was married, and I found out later on that he thought he wouldn’t find his mate since he was old so he married a girl that he fell in love with. And he also had his twin boys; Carson and Alex. He rejected me, and the fact that we were mates was kept a secret. A strong hatred to his wife was formed in knots inside my heart, especially after she got pregnant with Carson. I wasn’t allowed to see her at that time because Bob knew that I would kill her since I was a witch. But when she was due to give birth to Carson, I played the innocent role that I wanted to be there at the hospital. While there, I cast a spell at her without anybody noticing, and that spell was meant to kill her while giving birth so it looked like a ‘natural’ death.”
“So YOU killed her?” I asked in disbelief. My mom has always been a murderer. I couldn’t believe that I was raised by a murderer.
“Yes. She took my mate from me!” Tears spilled from her eyes. I could see where she was coming from. I would be seriously hurt if Alex was with another girl, but I wouldn’t go to the extent of killing her.
“But you were also with dad at that time,” I pointed out.
“Yes, but I was willing to leave him for Bob. But Bob wasn’t.” My mouth formed the shape of an “O”. “Let me continue. Bob knew that I was responsible, but he didn’t tell anyone. Instead, he banned me from ever seeing him. So I ran away. I ran away and started killing, for it satisfied my hunger. And then, I met a vampire. His name is Victor. We made a deal. I kill, and he takes the blood. Slowly, I’ve fell in love with him. He doesn’t know that yet. I would do anything for him.” She stopped.
“So? Why did you kidnap me?” I inquired, still not getting the point of the whole story,
“You are my latest victim. You cannot be happy with your mate if I can’t. So I’ll just end it by donating your blood to Victor.” She ended it easily.
