Chapter 14

"Hailey, I need to talk to you. Let's go upstairs." The worried look on my face was evident. I knew what this ‘talk' is about. It's about a stupid order that I failed to obey. I merely nodded and followed him upstairs, staring at his back as I did so. My heart beat accelerated, and my palms got sweaty.

When we reached upstairs, he took me to his room.

"Sit." He ordered, nodding towards the bed. I sat obediently, not wanting to get into more trouble.  He grabbed the chair from near his desk and pulled it, positioning it so that it was facing the bed. He sat on it, and it squeaked a little as his weight crushed it.

"You know why you are here, right?" I nodded, and waited for him to continue. He ran a hand through his messy brown hair and sighed. "But I can't punish you badly. You see, if you weren't my mate, I would've been able to punish you. But since you are my mate, it is physically impossible for me to hurt you. All I will be able to do is rant about how mad I am."

"I'm sorry, Alex. I didn't mean to just run away. But you have to understand that I was hurt." I tried to apologize. His eyes softened a little.

"I understand. I was able to sense how hurt you are, and I'm sorry too. I will not punish you, but if this happens again, you will be punished severely. Do you understand?" I nodded, unable to think of something else. Frankly, I thought that my punishment would be harsher than just that. Why did he let this go? I thought this was a big deal. I thought he said that ‘I will pay'. Not that I'm complaining. I'd rather go with just a warning than a full punishment.

"Okay, let's go back down." He smiled. I am actually scared now. Isn't he supposed to stare at me with resentment at me and act all bossy? Maybe he noticed that it isn't my entire fault.

We went downstairs, and I was quite blissful that this part was over.

I went back to my house and found my dad dead asleep on the couch. I guess he really needs it. The house was quiet, the sound of my footsteps echoing as I went upstairs to get my phone. When I ran away, I happened to stupidly forget my phone here. I texted Casey and Lance and asked them if they wanted to hang out. Now that I think about it, I really miss them. They texted me back saying that they'll meet me at McDonald's.

I drove to McDonald's and looked at my phone to check the time; I'm ten minutes early. I sighed and took a seat, waiting for Lance and Casey to show up. They'll probably come in the same car; they are neighbors after all.

I heard the door open and two people walk in. I looked up, hoping to find Lance and Casey, but instead, I saw none other than Hunter with some girl that I saw a couple of times in our pack. I've never really talked to her, but she seems like a nice girl. I went up to them to ask him if he chose whether he will help me with the baby or not.

I tapped him on the shoulder lightly. He looked back at me and his eyes widened slightly. I guess he wasn't expecting to see me here.

"Hey, Hunter," I said sweetly. "Can I talk to you for a minute?"

"Uh, yeah sure," He replied, and then turned to the direction of the girl that he's with. "I'll be back in a minute Hannah." He followed me to where I was sitting and sat down.

"I will make this quick. You obviously have company, and my friends will be here in any second." I said quickly, and then continued. "Did you think about it yet?"

"Yes, actually. I will pay for child support, and I will visit our child every once in a while, but I am not willing to become a father. I believe I am still young for that, and we are no longer together, I found my mate and you found yours." He concluded. This time, my eyes widened.

"You found your mate?" I asked. He nodded. "Did you tell her about the baby?"

"Not yet. But I will."

"Okay. Bye Hunter." I said, and we both got up and hugged each other.

"Bye, Hailey," He whispered in my ear, and then let go. I watched his retreating figure as he went back to his mate, Hannah.

Soon after, Casey and Lance came. We had a fun time talking, and fortunately, we didn't see Hunter later. It's not that I held a grudge against him. I'm actually glad that he decided to help me (even if it's just a bit). The truth is, Lance and Casey are the ones who can't stand his presence. I tried telling them that it's my fault too, but their minds are just too stubborn. We went out of the place and decided to go for a walk since it just stopped raining.

We walked for a while before a started hearing noises coming from the bushes – the same noises that I heard when walking from Reece's car to my house in the morning. They were terrifying. It felt as if it kept following us.

"Uh, guys... Can you hear that?" I asked, shakily. What if this was the murderer. The street was empty, and the silence was eerie. The only noises heard were our footsteps and the intermittent sounds of rustling in the bushes.

Casey's brows furrowed, confused, and then shook her head. Lance just shrugged. How can't they hear these sounds? The sound of the rustling gradually got louder, and we all stared at each other with wide eyes and stopped walking. Suddenly, something emerged from the bush next to us and started growling ferociously. We all shouted "Run!" simultaneously and sprinted to the opposite side of the enormous wolf. We all knew that this was the murderer, and we all knew that we stood no chance against it. Now that I think I about it, the wolf does seem vaguely familiar.

I put all my effort into running, and I can swear that I never ran so fast in my entire life. But unfortunately, the wolf was faster than all of us. It leapt up and landed on me, making me tumble to the ground. My head hit the floor hard, and I started getting a little dizzy. I used all of my strength to push the wolf from me and rolled on the ground, trying to avoid its thrashes that were aimed at me. I had to save my baby at all costs. I put my hand on my head where I fell, and felt a liquid. I looked at my hand and saw red blood covering. The sight made me nauseous. I groaned and sat up woozily.

The wolf was now attacking Casey. There was pretty much nothing she could do, and Lance was on the floor unconscious. I knew that I could never take that beast down, but I had to try, or else Casey will get hurt. I got up and swayed a little, trying to gain my balance. I walked up behind the wolf attacking my best friend and jumped on its back. It growled and shook me off. I was practically unconscious by then.

I tried moving, but I couldn't, and dark spots were invading my vision as I watched Casey get beaten up helplessly.

Suddenly, out of nowhere another wolf showed up, growling and bearing its teeth. This one was big, but not as huge as the one attacking Casey. As I focussed more, I noticed that the second black wolf was Alex! What's he doing here? The whole place is empty, and I don't think that Alex will just come here by coincidence.

I watched him as he attacked the mystery wolf. He wasn't really doing a good job at beating it up. He was receiving more blows that giving ones. It's not that he isn't a good fighter. He is actually an excellent fighter. The fact is that the other wolf was too strong. I closed my eyes, unable to watch this scene unfold. After some time of hearing disgusting crunching sounds, I felt a tap on my shoulder. I opened my eyes quickly, in defence mode.

When I noticed that it was just Alex with Lance on his shoulder, I visibly relaxed. We got up and went home, each person either limping, or groaning in pain.
