Chapter 20

I woke up to the feeling of my hair being brushed away from my face. Fingers swept over my cheek, making me shiver. I fluttered my eyes open and stared at the Adonis in front of me. Damn, Alex was fine! My head was on his shoulder and my hand was wrapped around his waist, holding him close to me. I had my leg draped over his body and he had his arms around me.

“Morning, sunshine,” he said.

“Morning, baby. How long have you been awake?” I softy asked.

“Not long. Fancy going out for breakfast?” He asked and I nodded my head. I got up from under the blankets and Alex’s eyes roamed over my body. Shit! I forgot that I was naked! I felt my cheeks heating up and I yanked the blanket from over Alex, wrapping it around myself so that he was the one exposed now.

“Hey!” He complained. I ignored him and went to the bathroom hearing his footsteps following me. He entered the bathroom while I was turning the water on so I turned to him and raised an eyebrow at him, mastering an intimidating look.

“And what do you think you are doing in here?” I asked.

“I-I thought we- we would…” he stammered with red cheeks and I burst out laughing, clutching my stomach and only managing to squeeze out the words, “your face… priceless!” before laughing once again.

“You meanie!” He exclaimed and I giggled at his childish behavior. It was really amazing to finally discover how it felt like to have a relationship with my mate. I couldn’t wait to tell everybody when we went back home. Everything felt so perfect. Little did I know that everything was about to turn upside down.

“That was really fun! We should really do this again!” I said as we made our way to the car after having breakfast. We were going back home, all happy and dandy.

“What will we tell everyone when they ask about why we didn’t get together when we first found out that we are mates?” I asked worriedly once we were driving towards our houses.

“The truth,” he replied so simply, as if he was talking about the weather. “We can’t lie to them, and I was horrible to you, so they deserve to know.

“But Alex-” I started but her cut me off.

“No, it’s final. Don’t mind what happens to me.”

We didn’t talk for the rest of the car ride, but there was soft music playing on the radio. Everything was silent and peaceful, but that was until the something jumped on the front of the car, making Alex stomp on the brakes before the car came to a screeching halt. We lurched forward and my head banged on the window making me feel woozy.

“Hailey, when I tell you to run, you open the door and away to the first safe place that you come across. Do not stick around!” he ordered and I nodded. When he was out of the car, he shouted “Run!” and lunged at the werewolf that had jumped on our car, changing mid-way. I slammed the door open and ran outside. I didn’t plan on leaving Alex behind. I couldn’t.

I sprinted towards a large tree, hid behind it, pressed my back against it while panting, and peeked from the side. I could see Alex’s black wolf fighting the other brown huge wolf. I noticed that it was the same wolf that attacked Lance, Casey, and me. From the way that it was fighting, I couldn’t believe that it was a female.

I closed my eyes unable to watch that wolf biting and hitting Alex, and whimpered from the pain that I was feeling. I could perfectly feel every blow and hit that Alex was receiving, and it was driving me insane! The sounds of jaws snapping and growls were filling my ears.

Suddenly, I felt a searing pain rip through my shoulder and I dropped to my knees, shrieking loudly as I heard Alex’s howling. I knew what that meant. The wolf had just bit a chunk of flesh from Alex’s shoulder. I took my phone out of my back pocket and dialed my dad’s number. When he answered with his usual cheery voice, I hurriedly filled him on our situation.  He said that he would call the pack for help and quickly hung up.

I peeked from the side again but immediately hid back because the scene was too much for me to watch. Funny how things change so quickly, eh?

When I felt another blow on the side of my head, I knew that it was time to act up. I changed into my wolf and went out from behind the tree, growling ferociously to declare my appearance. The both looked up at me in surprise; Alex’s look was pained but also angered because I didn’t obey his order, while the other wolf’s look was predatory.

Setting me as its new target, it got off of Alex and set its cunning eyes on me while walking menacingly slowly, waiting for the right moment to pounce. I eyed it carefully as Alex attempted to pull back its attention to me, but to no avail; its mind was set on attacking me.

After a few seconds of a stare-down, it lunged at me before I had any time to register what was happening. It landed on me and I howled in pain, thrashing my arms in an attempt to push her off of me, but it was in vain. That wolf was a female, but it had the strength of ten damn male bodybuilders!

It scratched its claws across my face, drawing out blood, and the nauseous feeling was doubling in my stomach. Suddenly, it was pushed off of me with a great force, but it wasn’t Alex this time; it was my dad. I looked around, and although my eyesight wasn’t at its best at the moment, I noticed that a few burly wolves that I recognized from our pack were there, standing in positions showing that they were ready to attack when help was needed.

I looked back at the murderer and noticed that it, too, was looking around at the pack members. When it saw that there was no way of victory at her side, and turned and ran away.

Alex and I were carried to the car that my dad brought, although I insisted on walking myself. I really had issues with being treated as a crippled person. I felt useless when I had to rely on someone to do things for me.

We were escorted to the hospital by our families and later on, Lance and Casey joined us too. I wasn’t seriously injured; I only had to get the scratch marks on my face cleaned up. Gladly, we didn’t have much to explain at the hospital since it was an all-werewolves place. Let me tell you, it hurt like a bitch when the antibiotics touched my wound, and I almost broke my teeth from gritting them so harshly.

Alex had to experience my pain but ten times worse. Other than the fact that he had more injuries, they were also deeper, and his doctor said that he needed plenty of rest while she pushed everyone out of the room. Of course, I was allowed to stay since the mate-bond speeded the process of healing.

I laid on the bed unable to sleep despite my lack of rest, and thought of who might have been the killer. I spent the whole night tossing and turning on my bed, but I just couldn’t sleep. I didn’t know if it was just my imagination, but I was hearing a mysterious ticking noise coming from the hospital window in my room.  I chose to ignore it, oblivious to the fact that the answer to all the questions swiveling in my mind was waiting for me outside.
