So, last time we talked about what a world view is and is not. This time I'll talk about the types of world view and why they don't work.
Let's start with the first question that we talked about last time. Is there an absolute truth? If you answer no, your worldview is relativism. Basically, what you're saying is "what's true for you may not be true for me." But, no one can live as a true relativist. There are many things that nearly everyone agrees on, such as murder. We all (hopefully) agree that murder is wrong. But what if I say my truth is that murder is okay, and I go out and murder someone. As a relativist, you would have to be okay ish with that because my truth tells me it's okay to murder.
Second question: is there good and evil? If you say people are basically good or bad, you are a nihilist. You also are saying what may be right for you may not be right for me. However, the difference between a nihilist and a relativist is that nihilist also say what may have been right then, may not be right now. For example, back in the olden times it was frowned upon if you had sex before marriage or were gay. Now, both of those things are acceptable. But again, you can't live like a true nihilist. A. For the same reason of truths, and B. going back to the murder, in twenty years or so, will it still be wrong to murder someone? It these things such as pre-marital sex and homosexuality are acceptable now, what's to say rape won't be acceptable later on, or genocide?
Thirst question, is there only one true religion? If you answer no, then you are a pluralist. They believe all religions have a part of the truth, and their biggest evidence is the story of the blind men and the elephant. Basically, all religions are like blind men who are led to an elephant and as they feel around, they have to describe the elephant. One man felt the tusk and said the elephant was hard and curved. Another felt the tail and said the elephant was thin a bit furry. Another still felt the flank and said the elephant was wide and velvety. (I don't know what an elephant feels like, I've never actually touched one...) However, there is a problem with that. They say we all have a part of the truth, but which parts are true? For example, Christians believe that Jesus is the Son of God, but Jews believe he was just a good man. So which would we believe? Or, some religions are polytheist while others are monotheist. Also, you say we only see part of the elephant, so does that mean you see the whole elephant?
Last question, is there a God? If you answer no, then you are a atheist. Atheists believe there is no God, resulting in the belief of evolution. To make it clear, evolution is not a worldview, it is simply how the worldview of atheism believes the world came into being since they do not believe in a god. However, you cannot live as a true atheist. I can assume you all love your family. Or your friends? Or someone, maybe yourself? But atheists believe we all evolved and everything happened by chance. That would mean we, as humans are simply animals and have no purpose in life. In which case, why is there any point in making a name for ourselves? Why would we care if someone disappears? Or even is living now? We know they are going to die eventually, and there is nothing beyond death. So why would we care about those things, or even care about or friends or family? There'd be no point. And if we continue down the line, why should we care about rules? Going back to murder, if I killed someone, everyone would be horrified, but if say a lion killed someone, no one would really care; simply stating that the lion was acting on its instinctive nature. So if we did indeed evolve from animals, and we have no purpose, why not say we were simply acting on our instincts? What, then, makes us so much better than any other creature on this earth?
So in conclusion, it would seem like any of these worldviews, you cannot live 100% like that. There is still some hint of an absolute truth, a distinct line between good and evil, one true religion, and that there is a God. As Christians, we must remember what we believe, and do not conform to the world's ways of thinking. Remember Romans 12:2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is - his good and perfect will.
