Knock, knock, knock.

Carlos hit his fair knuckles on the large wooden door, "Hey Mal I've got those chemistry notes that I borrowed," he cried. There was no response.

"Mal?" he asked once more.

Still, nothing. Cautiously, Carlos yelled, "Girls, I'm coming in."

He slowly twisted the golden knob and pushed open the door. Inside, the dorm was empty. Carlos picked up his pace as he walked over to the oak table in the centre of the room, thick purple notebook under one arm. He slid the borrowed notes onto the tabletop and spun on his heels. Though out the corner of his eye, Carlos saw a large ceramic bowl completely filled with cherry red apples; reminding him of the fact that he'd skipped lunch.

Grrrr...

The boy's stomach sounded ferocious. He was so hungry that he almost felt sick.

"Just one apple would be okay," Carlos told himself as he reached for the bowl, clutching the shiny fruit in his grip. Slightly sticky, he raised the apple to his mouth taking a giant, juicy bite. The crunch felt satisfying in his teeth.

At first the apple was next-to sickly sweet, but as the seconds ticked by, a bitter aftertaste grew in Carlos' mouth. He looked down at the brightly coloured fruit and saw the inside was as brown as brown as Dude's fur.

Immediately, Carlos dropped the gross apple to the panelled floor and spat, "Ew. Rotten."

He began to walk back towards the large door when suddenly, his vision turned hazy. The room began to spin and objects were nothing more than blots of fading colours. Carlos attempted to walk straight only to stumble on his own feet. The boy's head met the polished floor with a bang as he realised that he had the incapability to stand. Carlos saw the world fading harshly around him, feeling as though he was stuck in a never-ending whirlpool.

A little less than a foot in front of him, the bright cherry red apple lie with a massive chunk missing from its side.

Then, Carlos faded out of consciousness and into blackness.

The two girls laughed as they approached their dorm.

"Oh dear Lucifer no don't remind me!" Mal playfully slapped her friend's side.

Evie giggled, "Come on! That was a great day!"

Mal rolled her eyes with a sigh, "No it wasn't."

They stopped at their dormitory door to see it opened just a crack. At first, both girls looked at each other concerned. Then Mal realised, "Carlos was going to drop back my chemistry notebook. He probably just left the door open."

Pushing the door with her full body weight, Mal let Evie and herself into their room, but the second Mal took step inside, she dropped her books in fright.

"What the fuck?" she screamed louder than intentional.

Evie ran over to Carlos who lie flat on the floor completely unconscious.

"W-what happened to him?" Mal felt sick on the inside, praying that he wasn't dead.

"Don't worry. I think he just ate my project for the science festival," said Evie as she scratched her forehead.

Cautiously walking over to the two, Mal asked, "And what exactly would that be?"

Evie bit her bottom lip and stared at the floor. She muttered almost inaudibly, "Poison apples."

Mal's attention drew to a bowl of ripe apples sitting on the table next to her notebook. "E," she exhaled, "Look at those things! You should really put a sign up or something."
