"Happy birthday to me. Happy birthday to me," Carlos muttered cheerfully under his breath as he perkily walked back to his room.

He'd been in a good mood all day. Not entirely sure why, but he liked it.

With his heavy stacks of chemistry textbooks under one arm and a piece of emerald folded card in the other, Carlos continued down the grand halls of Auradon Prep; beaming a bright smile.

Maybe the idea of celebrating a birthday for the first time in his life played a role in his bliss.

Carlos stopped at a large oak-wood door. He placed his hand on the cold, golden handle and opened the door. Inside, the dorm was empty. He tossed the books onto his midnight blue and yellow plaid bedcovers and sat on the polished wooden table. Over in the far corner sat a black and white dog bed; the sight still tugged painfully at Carlos' heart strings.

Drawing his attention away from the bed, the boy stared down at the homemade, emerald green card with the phrase 'Happy Birthday Carlos' penned across the front in cursive gold print. He laughed lightly as he placed it down on a small pile beside him.

The second the paper touched the table, the door swung wide open.

"Jay!" Carlos jumped to his feet with excitement, "Where have you been? You were gone before I even woke up."

For a moment, Jay hesitated. "Yeah I had something to do."

Carlos recognised the look on his boyfriends face and decided it was best not to ask directly. "Well I hope everything's alright."

"It is," Jay responded bluntly.

Wapping his arms around the boy's waist, Carlos said, "I haven't seen you all day. I missed you this morning."

Jay kissed Carlos lightly on the forehead, "Happy birthday by the way."

"Thank you," Carlos sung as he tapped his boyfriend's back and pulled away. He reached for the small stack of cards with an electric smile, "Look! This one's from Mal and this one's from Evie and Ben gave me this one..."

The excitement glowing from Carlos struck Jay's heart like a bolt of lightning.  "Come with me; I've got something special for you."

"Okay, Jay, you're kinda starting to scare me," wearily spoke Carlos as he held his arms out in front of him.

Jay grabbed Carlos' arms, pushing them back down to his sides. "Put your arms down, dipshit. It's almost like you don't trust me or something," he said with a laugh.

Carlos' vision was pitch; as dark as the midnight sky.

"How much further are you taking me? Can I look yet?" nagged Carlos.

Bark!

The bark of a dog suddenly rang through the crisp air. Carlos gasped.

"If you must look, be my guest," spoke Jay as he took his hands away from his boyfriend's freckled cheeks. Before the pair of boys sat a tiny spotted Dalmatian with a blind left eye. Carlos leapt forward and immediately scooped the pup into his arms.

"Lucifer!" he exclaimed, "Jay are you for real?"

"Yes! Look, I saw how hard Dude hit you and it honestly broke me a little on the inside," Jay loosely hugged his boyfriend from behind whilst resting his chin on Carlos' shoulder.

"Thanks man. I appreciate it," Carlos spun on his heels and pecked Jay's lips.

As the two boys leant back in for another, deeper kiss, Carlos' puppy playfully jumped up from his arms and licked Jay on the lips.

"He's jealous," chuckled Jay, wiping his mouth.

Carlos grinned, looking Jay deep in the eyes, "He should be."
