"Dammit," you hissed as you walked into the large library. A small part of you was praying that she wouldn't show.
"If you bothered to stay in and revise instead of going out and getting your heart shattered then you wouldn't be in this position," you muttered to yourself in disappointment.
With your head facing the polished floor, you walked towards the furthest table in the back corner of the library; where she said to meet. You're broken spirit lifted slightly as you noticed nobody waiting for you.
I'll give Evie five minutes, otherwise I'm out of here, you mentally told yourself.
You tapped your vibrant blue nails on the wooden table. The shelves of books that reached all the way up to the high ceilings like forest ivy was almost intimidating.
A minute passed. No sign of the girl.
You placed the thick stack of textbooks and papers onto the tabletop with deep irritation.
Yet another minute went by. Still, no Evie.
As you massaged your temples, you exhaled. Out the corner of your eye you saw tall, slim Lonnie walking passed with a cherry blossom covered notebook under one arm. She hid her face behind her palms as she picked up her pace.
As she should, you smugly thought.
"Hello,' chirped a perky voice from your right.
Turning to face the person, you rolled your eyes. "Doug go away I'm busy."
"Waiting for Evie?" he tilted his head. You noticed his stack of multi-coloured books in his hands.
If it was even possible, your glum face dropped even more.
Doug smiled, placing his paperbacks beside yours. "Evie couldn't make it. She insisted that I help you study for that make-up test instead."
Letting out a moan, you slammed one of your heavy books open, "Let's get this over with."
Doug's joyfulness irritated you. Anything remotely happy irritated you at that point in time. Ever since you'd caught your boyfriend pashing Lonnie last week, it had been hard to smile without hurting a little.
The boy took a seat beside you and read through the textbook chapter in which the test was on. He'd explain everything with his passion for science leaking through at any moment possible. Bluntly, you'd nod every so often before summarizing what Doug had just said in small, dot point form. You knew all the stuff he was telling you anyway. Until he suddenly exclaimed mid-sentence, "Chad's a dick."
"Doug," you said in a depressed tone as you rolled your head.
"What? You've been miserable for the past hour and we both know it's true."
You furrowed your brow, "You don't think I've heard that enough this past week?"
"I'm sorry to pry but just move on from that prick," he hissed lightly whilst pressing his index finger on the bridge of his glasses, sliding his them up his nose.
In a huff, you aggressively shut your open books and stood up straight. "I think we're done here. Thanks for the help," you said half-heartedly.
"No, (Y/N), wait," Doug gently grabbed your wrist with an apologetic look reflecting in his soft eyes, "I shouldn't have said that. Just sit back down so we can study."
Faintly, you sighed.
"Doug, I'm not stupid. Just because I got a lousy grade on a test doesn't mean I'm not as smart as you or Evie."
The boy had a shocked look spread across his face.
"I only needed to do this study session because if I didn't my mum was going to ban me from hanging out with friends at all," you continued.
Doug stood up straight, sliding his hand from your wrist to your palm. "I don't think you're stupid," he smiled sweetly.
Then you felt your cheeks blush. You could see your reflection hazily in his jet, slim glasses. With a light laugh you responded, "Thank you."
It was the first genuine smile you'd smiled all week.
"You know what?" chirped Doug, squeezing your hand in his, "I don't think we need to revise anymore. I think you're ready to ace that chemistry test all on your own."
Your cheeks flushed an even pinker shade as you turned your uncontrollable smile towards the floor.
"How about we ditch these books and go watch a movie?" he added.
You grinned, "I'd like that."
