"You should just talk to her," your friend whispered from your right.
Instantly, you turned pink in the cheeks. Mal's comment took you entirely by surprise. "I-I don't know what you're talking about," you stuttered defensively.
The girl laughed. She rolled her eyes as she gave you a pat on your shoulder. You knew exactly what she was talking about. Mal was talking about Evie. Ever since they moved over from the Isle of the Lost you hadn't been able to take your eyes off her, but you're too shy to ever say anything.
"(Y/N), people will never know how you feel unless you tell them," the girl explained, "And Evie's my best friend; she might be smart, but she can't read minds."
You let out a soft chuckle, your cheeks deepening in colour. Just thinking about Evie made your insides feel warm and fluffy. You were then shot down by small fact; you'd never spoken to anybody about your romantic feelings towards them before.
"But Mal?"
"Yeah?" she responded.
You bit your lip in slight embarrassment, "I've never done that before; told somebody that I like them before, that is."
"Well, I've found that the best thing you can do is to speak from the heart," said Mal, "Be honest with her."
You felt your palms beginning to shake. Exhaling with nerves, you couldn't help but smile.
'I'm going to do this,' you told yourself, 'I'm going to finally tell Evie how I feel'.

There she was, standing by her locker. Class had only just got out for the day. In your arms you held textbooks and notebooks piled up almost to eyelevel. As you plucked up the courage to approach the girl, your heart began to race. Pounding and pounding like it had never before. Your cheeks flushed shades of pink even though you hadn't spoken a single word yet.
Just as you began to approach the girl, a tall teen that you failed to recognise appeared next to Evie. His build was large and muscular and the smirk on his face spoke a million words. From a distance you watched the boy and Evie talk for a while. Each glance exchanged between the pair felt like a bullet through the heart.
By this point everything seemed so surreal, "This is what you get for falling in love," you mentally started to beat yourself up over the situation as a single tear ran down your cheek.
Suddenly, Evie closed her locker door. The two walked out of your sight. You turned sharply on your heels and dashed down the corridor before anybody got the chance to see you cry. As you were running towards your dorm, you passed Mal who attempted conversation, but her words came across nothing other than a huff of breath whilst you ran by.
The second you entered your room, your weak knees gave in. Collapsing to the polished wooden panelled flooring, you let out a painful exhale.
The seconds that passed felt like hours as you sat a sobbing mess. The sunlight bleeding across the floor through the window warmed your skin, though everything else seemed cold.
Knock, knock, knock.
"Go away," you cried to the large door.
"Hey, (Y/N)?" a voice spoke from the other side that you couldn't not recognise.
Your eyes instantly widened. You flimsily jumped to your feet as you wiped your damp eyes on the sleeve of your shirt.
"Evie?" you asked.
"Yeah, umm, hey can you please open the door for a minute?"
Trying to hide the sudden burst of excitement throughout your body, you walked as calmly as you could towards the door. You took a deep, shaky breath before turning the golden knob. As beautiful as ever, Evie stood just in front of the doorway; her dark blue hair shaped her face, falling neatly on her shoulders.
You look down at the floor, "What's up?" you tried to act as if nothing was wrong.
"I spoke to Mal literally two seconds ago," she began.
You nodded your head as you cut Evie short, "Look, I know where this is going so I'm just going to tell you outright that I like you. A lot. And I understand that you don't like me in that way. This conversation doesn't need to get anymore awkward so you can just leave now and we will never speak of this again," the words pained you to say.
Evie's head tilted to the side slightly. At first she let out a light chuckle which gradually grew into a loud laugh. Your cheeks blushed ferociously, yet the colour only deepened as to your surprise Evie leant in giving you a soft peck on the lips. Your heart was sent aflutter.
"(Y/N), I think you're cute," she said with a genuine smile.
Speechless, you stood in the doorway opening and closing your mouth like a goldfish.
"And you don't have to worry about the guy before; he likes guys. We're just working in a group together for a chemistry project."
You felt an uncontrollable smile grow across your face.
In a shy voice you managed, "D-do you want to come inside for a bit?"
"I'd like that."
