Kelsey
The drive through New York was crazy. We were blasting music the entire way and the windows of Celeste's car were rolled all the way down. The wind was blowing through our hair wildly and every time we stopped, people gave us weird looks because of the music.
"Ooh, what if we meet boys there?" Lexi smiled excitedly and turned down the volume of the radio. She turned in her seat to face me and Rose in the backseat.
"Okay, calm down," Celeste giggled and looked over at her for a moment before looking back at the road ahead of her. She brought her eyebrows together in a serious expression as she looked back over toward the younger angel. She tried desperately to keep the serious expression on her face. But Lexi was leaning into her shoulder, widening her eyes into the most innocent expression she could muster. Celeste quickly dropped her expression, pushing her away.
"No! I never get to talk to anyone!" Lexi practically squealed and grabbed Celeste's arms. "Come on, don't act like you aren't excited!" She was getting a little too excited for us to just be going out for a festival. The absolute excitement and pure happiness that lit up her eyes almost made me laugh, and that was only because I knew her so well and she gets excitable about the smallest things.
But, a tiny part of me respects her for that quirk. She was the complete opposite of me, even if she was destined to be my best friend. I was the pessimist, while she was the ever enthusiastic optimist. I was the depressing rain cloud that was expected from someone in my position, while Lexi was the umbrella to shield me from the torrential downpour of my moods. She brought me into the light from the darkness that had surrounded me after I'd run away from the Pack.
Celeste rolled her eyes and let her neck go slack so her head rolled to the side to look at Lexi dramatically. "I'm completely fine with being alone. I have Rose after all, it's not like I can leave her for long anyway... She'd track me down if I even tried to leave. But, I've been around her for centuries, so it's not like I'd even want to leave."
"Celeeeeeeeste!" Lexi flopped over so her head was resting on Celeste's shoulder again. "Come onnnnnn!" she drew out the words. "Some of us actually want to go out and meet people! You can't just hole yourself up forever!"
"Well, I happened to survive for how long by 'holing myself up' with Rose?" Celeste frowned and pushed Lexi off her shoulder. "Besides, maybe I'm perfectly content by myself? I've had how many years to find myself the perfect date? Honestly, I'm thankful for your offer, Lex, I really am, but I'm fine on my own."
"Fine," Lexi sighed heavily and turned back to look at me and Rose in the backseat. "I'm just excited about going out and meeting people! What about you guys?" Her eyes lit up with a new found hope as she turned her full attention to us in the backseat.
Rose shifted uncomfortably, the same as Celeste as she looked in the rearview mirror at us. "Yeah, um..." Rose trailed off into a moment of uncomfortable silence. "The last time I got involved with a guy, it ended pretty badly. I'm not exactly ecstatic to dive back into that world..."
"You guys are no fun!" Lexi whined as she finally turned to me. "Hopefully you're more willing to meet guys. We can be each other's wingman! That would be so much fun! Maybe we can even try to talk with some guys," Lexi winked. She's always been overly dramatic.
I sighed, frowning and rolling my eyes. "Look, I get there we're best friends and all. But come on, Lex. Don't you think you're being just a little dramatic?" I raised an eyebrow and pinched my fingers together, feeling my face heat up with regret. It was nothing personal, it's just in the nature of what we are as werewolves. We can't just meet someone and immediately think we want to get with them. Besides, like a normal wolf, us werewolves mate for life. So, it's not like I want to make a rash decision on who I want to date or sleep with.
