The next morning, I got up later than my usual time. This was very, very unusual for me. I rarely woke up late because it's always been hard for me to fall asleep and stay asleep.
"Mom?" Kelsey slowly stuck her head through the crack in my closed door. "Oh, good you're awake!"
"Yeah, finally," I chuckled to myself and sat up in the bed.
Kelsey walked into the room, closing the door behind her so no one could hear what she was about to say to me. Her body language read that she was nervous and wasn't sure about things going around in her mind.
"What's the plan for today?" she asked, leaning her back against the door.
"It's whatever you want to do," I smiled in response. "You should go out and have fun."
"But-" Kelsey started to speak, but I cut her off.
"No, forget about Rose's vision yesterday. Please, go out. I'll be fine. It's fine," I smiled and waved with my hands for her to go away. "Just text me throughout the day, please."
"If you say so," Kelsey sighed and turned her back to me. She opened the door and disappeared into the blinding light that came from the hallway.
I sat up in the bed and threw the blankets off myself. An uneasy feeling settled in the pit of my stomach. Something wasn't right. I couldn't put my finger on it, but I know something was off.
My phone buzzed. We're leaving, I'll text you later. Kelsey sent the message and I heard the front door shut.
Once I had gotten dressed, I stumbled into the kitchen to make myself some breakfast. I had my back turned to the pantry as I grabbed a bowl from a cabinet and pulled a spoon out of a drawer. As I turned, there was a weird squeak and another strange noise. The pantry door was in the middle of swinging open as I turned. I frowned and took a step back. I know for a fact that I didn't accidentally bump the door and it was closed when I walked into the kitchen. Maybe it's just nothing, though.
I shrugged the moment off and nervously walked toward the doorway. But, I backtracked and grabbed the silver hunting knife I kept in the kitchen out of the still open silverware drawer. Cautiously, I approached the pantry one last time with the knife at the ready. I yanked the door open quickly to surprise anything that may or may not be lurking behind the door. But, there was nothing but the food we kept in the small room.
"What the hell?" I muttered under my breath and dropped the knife to my side. "What's going on?" I turned to look around me. Nothing else was out of place but this door. I shook off the feeling and continued around the kitchen to finish making my breakfast.
After I ate my food, I decided to clean the house. It hasn't been done in probably a month, so it was high time to be cleaned.
I walked into the laundry room to go to the small closet where the cleaners were kept and noticed the garage door was unlocked. "That's not supposed to be like that," I muttered under my breath and frowned slightly. I knew Kelsey wouldn't leave the door unlocked and she goes through the house before she leaves, always. There's never been an exception to this habit of her's. I shook my head and flipped the lock shut, putting the event behind me.
