Through all the chaos, Embry had made it to Harper in time. And, once it was all over, he received the signal that it was safe to phase back and escort Harper home while Jo helped Jacob tend to Bella on the beach.
The drizzle had finally faded to a thin mist by the time Embry walked Harper through the woods to her house.
The forest around them was quiet now, damp earth soft beneath their shoes while fog curled through the trees in pale ribbons. Somewhere deeper in the woods, waves crashed faintly against the cliffs.
Harper shoved her hands deeper into the pockets of her jacket as they neared the house.
"You know," she said dryly, "I think I can survive the terrifying journey from the road to my front door."
Embry followed behind her, hands shoved awkwardly into the pockets of his hoodie.
"It's just a precaution," he said. "In case Victoria comes back. Jo insisted."
Harper hummed noncommittally.
And Embry frowned slightly.
Something felt... off.
Usually Harper was bright and energetic and full of drama but tonight she seemed almost bored. She was all curt and distant. Maybe it was just because they'd never really spent any time alone together.
Embry rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly.
"Can I ask you something?"
Harper took out her keys as Grams's house came into view.
"If you must."
Embry hesitated.
Then just blurted it out.
"Before everything went down today... me and Jo kissed."
