After a rather tearful reunion between Alice and Bella, the two sat on the couch, catching up while Jo stood in the Swans' kitchen preparing some hot cocoa for herself and Bella.
As the mixture boiled on the stovetop, something occurred to Jo and she pulled out her phone, dialling Jacob's number.
He answered on the first ring.
"Jo! Get outta the house! There's a—"
"Yeah, I know," Jo answered flatly with an eye roll, "Don't worry, it's just Alice. Everything's cool here so you can call off the rat pack."
"She's a vampire, Jo. She's dangerous," Jacob insisted, his voice thick with worry and frustration.
"Alice is my friend," Jo reminded him, "Has been for a long time. And she's not gonna hurt anybody."
"You can't know that for sure," he said.
"Yes. I can actually," she said sharply.
Jo sighed.
She could see where Jacob was coming from. He didn't know the Cullens like she did. He didn't know that they were like family to her, that they helped her. So after months and months of chasing down vampires that only meant them harm, she understood why he'd be so hesitant.
"Look, Jake. I promise you, everything's fine here. And if anything happens I'll call you. But you gotta trust me on this one."
Jacob inhaled sharply on the other side of the line, considering it.
He could hear the conviction in her voice, the steadiness, the surety.
He and Jo were at odds for so long, and now he was meant to be rebuilding whatever scraps of a relationship they had. And if he ever wanted his family to go back to what it was, he had to show her that he trusted her. So, although, he was reluctant, and although every bone in his body was screaming at him to barge into that house and drag Bella and his sister out, Jacob agreed.
"You swear you'll call?" He asked, voice small.
Jo sighed in relief and crossed her heart — and even though he couldn't see her, he could picture it anyway. Because, even though they had both changed so much over the years, she was still Jo, still his twin sister.
