"Jo, you're not serious," Jacob called after her as she hurried out onto the porch behind Alice and Bella.
Jo didn't break stride.
"As a heart attack."
She paused for half a second.
"Sorry. Too soon."
Bella groaned despite herself.
"Jo."
"What? It was right there."
"JO."
"Okay, okay."
The humour vanished as quickly as it had come.
Rain misted across the driveway as the four of them hurried toward Carlisle's Volvo.
Alice already had the driver's door open.
"We don't have much time."
"We know," Bella answered, tossing her bags into the trunk.
Behind them, the front door burst open again.
"JO!"
Jacob's voice echoed across the yard.
He and Embry sprinted across the wet grass, neither slowing until they reached them.
Jacob reached her first.
He grabbed her elbow.
"Don't."
Jo didn't even look at him.
"Jake—"
"No."
His grip tightened.
"Don't even start."
She sighed.
