Megan's POV
Present Day
2024
The longest day of my life. The longest fucking day. I sat in the hospital, staring at Jett, who had finally come to. Jill sat on the other side of the hospital bed, still angry with me. Nella and Hazel sat with her. My mind raced. Why did I have to be so stupid? Why? Why did I have such clouded judgement? My son, Jill's son, was in the hospital, we were in the hospital and court, to hear the verdict, was just a few hours away.
I stood up, grabbing Jet's hand in the process, "I love you Jet. Always."
Immediately, I could see embarrassment cross his face. "I know." Was all he'd say before he let my hand go and turned to face Jill.
He didn't know. But, he knew something. He had to have known something for him to try to—try to overdose on his sleeping pills. He'd had to have known something.
"Mama, I don't want to be here anymore."
Jill placed a hand on Jet's cheek, "I know baby, but first we need to make sure you're cleared to go home."
I checked my watch, it was still early. It read 8:44AM. We'd been here for an hour and I was sure a psychiatrist would be walking into the room at any minute.
"Mommy, what's wrong with Jet? Is he sick?" Nella asked.
Jill's eyes met mine. "Somewhat. But he will be fine. We can talk about it all later, okay? Check on him for me, let me speak to Mama for a minute."
Jill got up, motioning for me to follow her outside of the room, so, I did. She closed the door and right after doing so, she hugged me. I stood still, not wrapping my arms around her immediately. I was baffled.
"Thank you." Was all she said before letting me out of her grasp.
"For what?"
"Despite me being in a mood about us, thank you for immediately bringing him here."
I rubbed my forehead. "He's our son, Jill. Of course I brought him here."
We sat in an uncomfortable silence. For the first time in our relationship, I truly did not know what to say to her. I fucked up. Part of me was hoping she would forgive me, but I knew it would take time and maybe she never would trust me again. We stood there looking at one another, until she folded her arms and started to walk back into the room. I grabbed her arms quickly.
"Jill."
"Jovon."
"Court is still today."
Her face scrunched. "I know that."
With that, she walked back into the room. I let out a deep sigh. I just had to face the fact that I would go through the last day of the trial alone. I noticed a doctor walking towards me, I instantly felt discomfort.
"Are you Mrs. Pete-Scott?"
"I am."
"I would say good morning if we were under different circumstances; I'm Dr. Johns, I'm a psychiatrist. Your son Jet has, as you know, spoken with the therapist we assigned with him as soon as he arrived. He hasn't given us much, but, he did hint at court rulings and things of that nature...what can you tell me about that?"
"Well—I," I took a breath. "I've been in court, facing my abuser, the kids are old enough to be there, especially Jet." That's when it clicked. The fucking trial is what caused this, what else could it have been?
"Trials of any sort are enough to rattle a child, affect him in a way that he may not even understand, especially if he knew the abuser. Has he witnessed anything that you know of that may have triggered what happened today."
